I don't know if I'm missing something but your example isn't working for me. I keep getting AsyncGenerator object has no attribute 'post' when the helper function tries to call client.post

I'm using httpx 0.22.0 because 0.23.0 has a CVE against it so I can't use it in my environment but I don't think that is the issue.

Ah, yes, I got this error as well, I think something changed in pytest+asyncio.

If I remember correctly, I was able to fix it by explicitly declaring my fixtures as async: https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest-asyncio#async-fixtures

Another thing I did, though optional, was to set "auto async" mode so that async test are detected as such, automatically: https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest-asyncio#modes

I just switched from @pytest.mark.asyncio() to @pytest.mark.anyio() and now it's working. Thanks for the post. Helped a lot to put all the pieces together.
