Maybe you could create a successor fork like other KSP mods have done and call it ReentryParticleEffectContinued. I dont have much free time to help with coding but id be happy to test it!

You could also post it to CKAN

We're trying to make contact with the dev via KSP forum. Probably forking will be the solution as you said!
