Feature request: better thumbnail workflows #888

Description

@azadbal

Nailing the thumbnail of a splat is critical to have control over your SuperSplat post's presentation.

Problems with how thumbnails are currently set:

  • there's no frame guide or explicit representation of what the thumbnail of the splat will be prior to upload. It uses the 1st frame of the animation, which can be hard to set, especially due to the first keyframe often being influenced by the curves of the last keyframe in the timeline (due to the looping animation)
  • the thumbnail is 1:1 aspect ratio, which is unlikely to be the 16:9 / 16:10 aspect ratio that a user is viewing their splat in. I now always make my supersplat window square to get a better sense of what my thumbnail will be after upload
  • once a splat is uploaded, you cannot change the thumbnail. this is very restrictive.

Suggestions:

  • Sketchfab has a great workflow for setting the thumbnail of a model, which also acts as the initial camera loading position. It also saves the current pivot point, so you can also optimize the UX of your audience loading into your model, and rotating it around. When you hover your mouse over the "save view" button, it overlays a frame guide of what the thumbnail will be.
  • Having the post-upload "studio" button open up a Sketchfab "3D settings" style experience where you can adjust: the camera animation, the orientation/rotation/position/scale, the VR playback settings, PISPP still exposure settings, re-uploading the asset and replacing the model without taking the post down, and more.
  • If you'd like more views as to how professional photogrammetry folks have used Sketchfab's settings to nail the presentation of their models, please refer to my Photogrammetry for Sketchfab guide (esp the 2nd half of the article).
