Build step needs to invoke external code generation tool

Can a toml file be used to describe a build step for generating some files? E.g I want to invoke a code generation tool that generates from python files. I tried to use build_py, but not sure about the syntax. Something like this;

[tool.setuptools.commands]
build_py.pre = ./my_code_gen_tool.sh

That option is not implemented (¿yet?) in setuptools.

Right now if you want to add custom build steps you need to define a custom command class via cmdclass in setup.py.

Thanks for confirming! Do you know if that is going to be supported any time soon? If not, do you know any other tool supporting that from a toml file? I was looking at poetry, hachling and flit_core but reading through documentation takes a while.

To my best knowledge you always have to write some form of Python code for other tools too¹. I don't know any tool that allows you to run shell scripts directly.
