Visual glitch when tapping inbox when already in inbox

Pressing inbox in bottom left when in inbox refreshes the UI badly. Not the same as in other areas of the bottom bar like today anytime or upcoming. In this video I am repeateedly pressing the inbox button in bottom left and as you can see it is tweaking out. Not the same in other areas. I am on v1.0.24 Pixel 9 GrapheneOS.

Hi, I have been using this for a few days and I love it. Before I switched to android and Linux I used Things 3, and it never sat right for me that there was no e2ee. Now, vikunja doesn't have e2ee, but I can selfhost it which is a decent middleground. Vicu is a great improvement on the vikunja experience for me, so I am really enjoying it.

 I have found quite a few bugs or tweaks I would like and I have quite a few ideas. Is it okay if I make them all into seperate issues?

Here is the rough list, I can add more detail in separate issues with screenshots or whatever:

Bugs:

Swiping from right to left on a task and holding causes extremely fast repeated vibrations. It should just vibrate once the way swiping from left to right to mark as completed does

Unify UI between making a task and editing. The font and UI is different when editing a task and first making a task. The font size is way too big when editing a task and is different from the font size when creating a task.

There is a tip in gestures settings that says there is an undo option after completing a task. I don't see any undo option so either remove tip or add button.

Unify these features. We create or edit projects in general settings, we edit or create labels in task creation/edit and lists in left sidebar. We can see tags in the left sidebar

Labels/tags are called Labels in task creation/edit, but tags in the left sidebar.

I also think it's a little clunky to have a whole edit button (pencil) for changing the order of projects and lists when it could just be a press down and drag.

Lists and projects have an edit button to change the order, but tags/labels do not.

In general settings, we can edit the color of projects and name and parent project with the pencil icon, but there is also a pencil icon in the left sidebar to just edit the order of tasks or lists.

Subtasks don't follow the main task when changed projects.

I get an HTTP 404 when I try to press the checkbox on adding a label. Sometimes it adds, sometimes it doesn't

The checkbox when adding a label/tag does not check even if it is added.

Ideas:

Add an optional deletion timer for the logbook. Idk it could be nice for people that don't want to end up with years of logged items. Definitely optional with configurable timing.

Personally I like the way that things 3 does it with inbox. It is in the inbox if it isn't assigned to a project or a date. I think that tasks should leave inbox if assigned to a date instead of only leaving the inbox if they are assigned to a project.

This will be quite a large release, getting the mobile app back in sync with desktop.
I've covered all the bugs you reported and the two ideas, they're now optional in settings. Given the scope of the release in still testing it.

Okay I tested for about an hour. Priorities are just my opinion and obviously some categories are more important so a low in visual bugs should be fixed before a high in ideas.

Ideas

Low: View time/date task was created?

Medium: Could make add more tasks mode where it doesn't close the task maker, it just empties the completed task and starts a new one but idk

Medium: This might be on the vikunja side idk, but I always have advocated against confirm delete screens and just add a trashbin that would be way better.

Low: Could make it so you go back to the bottum tab when going back from settings and keep settings tab state when
going back but idk maybe reset to inbox and general part of settings is fine

Medium: Could make add more tasks mode where it doesn't close the task maker, it just empties the completed task and starts a new one like how add more issues on github works.

Low: Add material expressive like animations for bottum bar when you click them idk not essential obviously.

Low: I could imagine it might be nice to be able to change the add task button position. Personally I wouldn't want this option, but I'm a righty idk if lefties would want to change it.

Medium: Allow making font smaller or make it smaller or just find a way to fit more space in the task title. Not totally sure on this one, maybe I should be using the notes idk. Open to feedback on this one because I'm unsure.

High: Not smooth when opening a new task, there's like stutters when pulling up keyboard and stuff. Not lag or anything, it's very consistent.

Low: Explain "add relation" I don't understand it

Medium: The separation between tasks in the review area isn't intuitive. I was confused until I realized they are separate tasks.

Low: Show the actual reminder info when viewing a task instead of just "one reminder". This would bring parody with labels and priority. Imagine if it says, "one priority", that would be so weird.

Low: What is FAB in gestures manual area in settings?

High: Add confirmation for deleting project.

Medium: Not smooth when saving a new task there's a little stutter

low: I like how the add task button shrinks and removes the "New task" label when you scroll down but it doesn't make much sense it seems a little weird. I mean it's looks good as it is in rectangle, but I also like the minimal of just the plus, and obviously we know it adds a task. Don't have a strong opinion on this, open to ideas.

Low: Task complete undo popup doesn't really match theme. It's a white text bar, while the rest of the app is Dynamic colors material 3.

Medium: Should be able to select multiple items to move around

Visual Bugs

Low: For some reason you can see the title of the"drag handle"if you long press on it

High: Extreme visual bug when swiping up from very bottom of edit task. Screen shakes and glitches aggressively

High: When you search something and then put keyboard into minimize so the keyboard is hidden, the search bar goes off screen in the clock area level and is unusable

High: It's too easy to accidentally swipe complete or date a task when I am swiping from bottum of screen to top
Low: The subtext under hide old completed tasks is a bit to close to the button. Actually this happens with a few different descriptions in settings.

Low: There's this delay when you've just swiped down a task that makes your clicks on opening a new task not register even when it seems fully down. This makes you wait a little extra after swiping down in order to press a new one and breaks the fidget factor. I can give videos if you can't reproduce, but this isn't crazy important.

When complete a bunch of tasks the task complete stays at the bottom and continues spamming that "Undo task" for each task you completed.

Consistency

Medium: Show the project category a task is in when in upcoming and today like how it is with anytime.

Medium: In new task, the reminder button says remind, but in edit task it says reminder.

Low: Don't allow editing inbox in project settings because it doesn't do anything

Medium: In create task screen it asks for image, but in edit it asks for attachment

Medium: Allow set priority in add task like how you can in edit task. Basically a bunch of these are edit mode and initial add task parity
Medium: Make add label consistent with the other add thingies in edit task. Rn it's a plus while reminder and projects are little widgets.

Swipe left and right to change date and complete problems

low: The circle overlaps the checkmark weirdly when swiping to complete

Medium: only plays haptic when fully swipe left or right, but the action completes with a short swipe that doesn't trigger haptic. This whole area needs work.

Medium: Allow swipe to undo a completed task in the opposite way as you swiped to complete. Include haptic ofc

High: The green and orange from the date/complete slider are kind of out of place they are the only times the colors show up and they don't contrast well with my dynamic colors for the app

Spinny thing complaints. Category high priority it really annoys me for some reason I would just get rid of it but idk.

reload spinny thing makes it feel like weird when you switch tabs

When you switch from inbox to today it always does spinny thing, but it's inconsistent with other bottum areas

There's the spinny loading whenever you go to today from anywhere, but not the spinny when you go to elsewhere
every time. I support changing the spinny it's annoying for some reason

Undo button problems

Medium: it's weird there's a undo for completing a task, but not for deleting a task.

Maybe make the undo button minimal like a small material themed button that pops up similar to the new task button

The undo task bar makes the screen look unbalanced because of the right hand add task button

Thanks again for taking the time to be so comprehensive, I truly appreciate it!
We really need this type of feedback to make the app better. I've noticed that there are many different ways of doing task management, and therefore needing to support different features and ways of using - while trying to maintain a clear UI focussed on personal task management. I don't want the app to get bloated, and still support different styles. It's been the same challenge for the desktop app. Even though I've used the app (mainly as companion to the desktop where I do the heavy lifting) for months, almost everything you mentioned is new to me.

Ideas

• I added this a while back in the Vicu desktop app and back then figured it wouldn't be useful on mobile. I can port that "info" button over

• We discussed this on the desktop version. Vikunja doesn't store deleted items, that's why we added the confirmation option and added a setting if you want or do not want the confirmation. We briefly considered creating a local trash, but syncing would be a nightmare.

• They're a pre-created smart list in the app, you can change which one you want to see in settings. E.g. I have Today / Upcoming / Work. But I can make it more clear they're pre-created. I probably also should update the documentation, a lot has changed since the last time I worked on that.

• It was ported from the desktop version, where there was a request to add it. It's a vikunja feature for more project related items, you can add relations (blockers, dependencies etc) for task that have relations to other tasks. I personally don't use it, and don't have a good workflow in mind for it. I just added support for the vikunja capability. It's one of those, you never touch or completely rely on it features I guess.

Medium: The separation between tasks in the review area isn't intuitive. I was confused until I realized they are separate tasks.

• This is still buggy, review is very new. Previous beta didn't include tasks at all in the review - but that made review hard. I like how it works on desktop, still experimenting on mobile. So thanks for that call out. I never missed review until I made a Vicu MCP, now I get an AI overview pushed of tasks and calendar, and what I haven't checked in while. It was my whole motivation of adding a review feature. I am not a Review-tab user, so struggle with coming up with the right workflow.

Because of the philosophy of how to use this app, I've made a requirement that you set an Inbox. But that doesn't have to be the case depending on how you do todo management. But maybe I'm overthinking it here

• it asks for both in edit. I did this to support screenshots better, and camera roll. The image opens a different picker than attachment. I didn't think of adding attachment to new task, because I've simply never used that on mobile - only desktop. Whereas on mobile I sometimes add a photo. The support for attachment in edit is because you can see attachments added on desktop.

• Yes this one has been annoying me too. Sometimes I consider removing the swipe left/right because of the headache it gives. But it's an easy feature to prioritize. I just added in the desktop the rightclick menu, and in settings the toggle what is urgent for you. Depending on that you can either schedule for today or set high priority. Thinking of adding that setting on mobile too, and that swiping is a way to quickly prioritize (due date or priority)

Undo button problems

• Task completion is saved, delete not - it's not supported by vikunja and didn't want a separate data store that's not synced. That'll bring headaches down the road. Could consider a panic undo - as in, it doesn't send the api call for ~20 seconds or something?

• I think I want to get rid of the task undo, the bar annoys me and don't know what to do with it. Task undo can be done via the check circle or via logbook. And if we add side wipe. Do we really need 4 ways to undo - data isn't lost in any case.

Yeah I'm really rooting for this app because I don't like to use the web on my phone. It's crazy there's like a billion private messengers, a billion private notes apps, but nobody has made a good private tasks app, before vikunja.

I was really attracted to your clients once I tried them because they were really similar to Things 3, which i think is the best tasks app of all time. But, it's only the apple ecosystem, closed source, no self hosting, no e2ee. Definitely check out Things 3 UI and UX if you can, if you have any apple hardware. It's by far the best tasks app I ever used, excluding the lack of freedom.

As you can tell i like to fidget with the UI so that's where a lot of my ideas come from.

That's a fair point, it definitely might not be needed. iirc todoist had this feature. but i could imagine myself spamming todos because i did all these issues as todos on the mobile app. like you have a bunch of ideas or you're making a list of things to do for the day like for a dinner party you might want to plan with tasks in the morning.

I can help at some point maybe. generally just don't add extra words and explain like you would if you were talking to someone. this is just a nitpick, I'm very appreciative i just wrote down every single problem I could find.

I mean it's looks good as it is in rectangle, but I also like the minimal of just the plus, and obviously we know it adds a task. Don't have a strong opinion on this, open to ideas.

up to you, it definitely fits in fine, it's just weird that you need enough tasks to be able to start scrolling to even see that behavior.

Low: Task complete undo popup doesn't really match theme. It's a white text bar, while the rest of the app is Dynamic colors material 3.

• So I just added this to the desktop version in the last beta and was still thinking how to do it best on mobile, maybe a long press with additional toolbar. Just wasn't sure on proper UI for this.

I forget how they did it in this in things 3 on iOS. It might have been a swipe from right to left to select a task, but I don't completely remember.

I can't find a video where someone selects something, but there are a few videos that show the iOS app in general.

Ope actually I found a video showing exactly the selection screen. I recommend looking into Things 3 because that is genuine task nirvana. It was the only todo app I could use for years. Any feature or UI you copy from there would be great or just use for inspiration.
I like vicu-android a lot more than Todoist and Tasks.org which both have been around for a long time and honestly functionally it's the almost at things 3 so I am very optimistic.

Visual Bugs

Low: For some reason you can see the title of the"drag handle"if you long press on it

• Where do you mean? I can't find it

It seems like this is intended because I figured out that other well-designed apps have this (breezy weather and the popular foss clock), but basically if you long press on certain elements it will show a written label. perhaps this is for accessibility, idk. The specific one I was referencing is if you long press on that little line in the center above new task it says "Drag Handle".

Don't worry about this probably.

High: Extreme visual bug when swiping up from very bottom of edit task. Screen shakes and glitches aggressively

Low: There's this delay when you've just swiped down a task that makes your clicks on opening a new task not register even when it seems fully down. When complete a bunch of tasks the task complete stays at the bottom and continues spamming that "Undo task" for each task you completed.

• Might need to look into this, you can change what you use as "Inbox" depending on how you use vikunja, and when it's not Inbox you can change it. So I'll need to account for that. Because of the philosophy of how to use this app, I've made a requirement that you set an Inbox. But that doesn't have to be the case depending on how you do todo management. But maybe I'm overthinking it here

yeah it's just weird that editing the inbox project in settings allows you to change the name, color, and attempt to delete it (it errors cleanly). When none of those edits change anything. It would be intuitive for it to be locked down imo.

yeah that is a bit over my head. low priority because no functionality is impaired, it's just polish and removes options that don't do anything.

Medium: In create task screen it asks for image, but in edit it asks for attachment

• it asks for both in edit. I did this to support screenshots better, and camera roll. The image opens a different picker than attachment. I didn't think of adding attachment to new task, because I've simply never used that on mobile - only desktop. Whereas on mobile I sometimes add a photo. The support for attachment in edit is because you can see attachments added on desktop.

That actually makes sense, but maybe if there was some built-into android way to ask if you want photos or files then it could be unified. I was just calling out for naming I didn't actually notice that it's files picker (attachments) in edit and photos picker in add task.

Medium: Allow set priority in add task like how you can in edit task. Basically a bunch of these are edit mode and initial add task parity

• I'll add, priority was added later and forgot it here - in the beginning we just had dates (again, I never used priority myself - only schedule by date). I'll also double check the nlp in the add task, it might be missing priority too.

• Yes this one has been annoying me too. Sometimes I consider removing the swipe left/right because of the headache it gives. But it's an easy feature to prioritize. I just added in the desktop the rightclick menu, and in settings the toggle what is urgent for you. Depending on that you can either schedule for today or set high priority. Thinking of adding that setting on mobile too, and that swiping is a way to quickly prioritize (due date or priority)

It just annoys me for some reason it breaks the fidgeting. Personally what I would do is just have it load in the background and make it smooth to change between bottom areas. I've seen some apps add that fake loading template if ya know what I mean and that works, but I think it might be unnecessary and clutter for no reason in this kind of app.

When you switch from inbox to today it always does spinny thing, but it's inconsistent with other bottum areas

There's the spinny loading whenever you go to today from anywhere, but not the spinny when you go to elsewhere every time. I support changing the spinny it's annoying for some reason

Undo button problems

Medium: it's weird there's a undo for completing a task, but not for deleting a task.

• Task completion is saved, delete not - it's not supported by vikunja and didn't want a separate data store that's not synced. That'll bring headaches down the road. Could consider a panic undo - as in, it doesn't send the api call for ~20 seconds or something?

I might have mentioned this earlier I'm kind of lost in this long document, but actually i don't think it's a huge issue it's not particularly easy to accidentally delete a task because it's all the way at the bottom.

Maybe make the undo button minimal like a small material themed button that pops up similar to the new task button

• I think I want to get rid of the task undo, the bar annoys me and don't know what to do with it. Task undo can be done via the check circle or via logbook. And if we add side wipe. Do we really need 4 ways to undo - data isn't lost in any case.
