MacGeneration, a well-known French tech news website, has just published an article about Thaw 🕺🏼
Please find below the English translation of the original article, which can be found here: https://www.macg.co/logiciels/2026/02/thaw-un-nouvel-utilitaire-pour-desencombrer-la-barre-des-menus-de-macos-306843
"Long considered the reference for managing menu bar icons on macOS, Bartender has lost some of its appeal since its change of ownership. In the meantime, several alternatives have emerged, notably Ice, an open source utility that attracted many users. However, Ice has compatibility issues with macOS Tahoe, and its development has been frozen.
This situation prompted developers to create a fork, in other words a derived version, called Thaw. The application thus takes up the torch, prioritizing improved compatibility with macOS Tahoe, as well as continuing development where Ice left off.
Thaw's primary function is to declutter the macOS menu bar by hiding certain icons. To reveal them again, simply click the app's icon or use a keyboard shortcut. The utility also offers several interface customization options. If you are not a fan of the very minimalist appearance of the menu bar in Tahoe, you can add a colored background or a thin bottom border to better distinguish it from the rest of the desktop.
Version 1.1 of Thaw, which has just been released, brings various improvements: a new interaction allowing hidden icons to be shown by double-clicking the menu bar, display bug fixes, reduced resource usage, and more. This update also introduces translations in twelve languages, including French.
If you are looking for a modern solution to better organize your Mac's menu bar, Thaw is clearly worth trying. The application is free and open source. It requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later."
