When a room has unread messages, it often shows "1" instead of the number. Clicking on the room briefly changes the number to something (like 17), which I am guessing is the true unread count. Then the timeline loads and the unread marker is positioned above the bottom message, indicating the unread count was 1. It then gets marked as read. The second, temporary number seems the be the actual unread count, if I examine a room's history and see where I recognize the last message.
