What elements are allowed?

I discovered that it appears I can only use this plugin on <input type="text" elements.

However, I have a situation where I'd like to change a full page PHP calendar to another month/year by clicking on a span of text, using your picker to choose the new month, then use your callback to load the new month on the page.

Playing around in jsFiddle, I was unable to invoke the date-picker on a span of text.

Is there a easy workaround?

EDIT:

I'm also thinking that maybe somebody would like to invoke the picker by clicking an icon.... how can that be done?

I'm thinking I'd want to invoke it once, pick both a date & time, and then use a callback to load the date into one field and the time into another.
