From 00e325c702e0c670f5d556f3a7600899a3d23fec Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: alitariksahin Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 18:54:30 +0300 Subject: [PATCH 01/16] feat(sdk): filesystem metadata operations in the JS and Python SDKs MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Client support for the file-metadata endpoints (backend: DX-2944), in both SDKs so the published surface stays at parity. - `files.stat(path, { follow })` / `files.stat(path, follow=...)` — returns type (file/directory/symlink/other), size, mtime, inode, and an opaque `version` token for optimistic-concurrency guards. Defaults to lstat so a symlink is reported as such; `follow` dereferences it. - `files.mkdir(path, { parents })`, `files.rename(from, to)`, `files.remove(path, { recursive })`. - `files.read(path, { offset, length })` — bounded byte-range read. The range is selected by the presence of `length`, not its value, so an explicit length of 0 reads zero bytes instead of falling back to the whole file. Python mirrors the JS surface (async source of truth, sync client regenerated); ruff, mypy, the JS<->Python parity gate, and both test suites pass. --- .changeset/file-metadata-ops.md | 12 ++ packages/python-sdk/CHANGELOG.md | 10 ++ packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md | 1 + .../python-sdk/tests/_async/test_box_files.py | 137 ++++++++++++++++++ packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/__init__.py | 2 + .../python-sdk/upstash_box/_async/client.py | 73 +++++++++- .../python-sdk/upstash_box/_sync/client.py | 73 +++++++++- packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/types.py | 16 ++ packages/sdk/src/__tests__/box-files.test.ts | 130 +++++++++++++++++ packages/sdk/src/client.ts | 82 ++++++++++- packages/sdk/src/index.ts | 1 + packages/sdk/src/types.ts | 20 +++ 12 files changed, 545 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-) create mode 100644 .changeset/file-metadata-ops.md diff --git a/.changeset/file-metadata-ops.md b/.changeset/file-metadata-ops.md new file mode 100644 index 00000000..7600885e --- /dev/null +++ b/.changeset/file-metadata-ops.md @@ -0,0 +1,12 @@ +--- +"@upstash/box": patch +--- + +Add filesystem metadata operations to `box.files`: + +- `stat(path, { follow })` — type (file/directory/symlink/other), size, mtime, + inode, and an opaque `version` token for optimistic-concurrency guards. + Defaults to lstat; `follow: true` dereferences a final symlink. +- `mkdir(path, { parents })`, `rename(from, to)`, `remove(path, { recursive })`. +- `read(path, { offset, length })` — bounded byte-range read, so a large file can + be sliced instead of pulled whole. diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/CHANGELOG.md b/packages/python-sdk/CHANGELOG.md index 810a69cf..05766449 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/CHANGELOG.md +++ b/packages/python-sdk/CHANGELOG.md @@ -4,6 +4,16 @@ All notable changes to `upstash-box` (Python) are documented here. ## Unreleased +- `files.stat(path, follow=...)`, `files.mkdir(path, parents=...)`, + `files.rename(from_path, to_path)`, and `files.remove(path, recursive=...)` — + filesystem metadata and mutation operations. `stat` returns the entry type + (`file`/`directory`/`symlink`/`other`), size, mtime, inode, and an opaque + `version` token for optimistic-concurrency guards; it defaults to lstat, so a + symlink is reported as one unless `follow=True`. +- `files.read(path, offset=..., length=...)` — bounded byte-range read. Where exec.command and exec.stream run a command and return its result, a session hands back a handle to a process that is still running: - `argv` runs a program with no shell; `cmd` runs one via `bash -lc`. - `write()` feeds stdin and `endStdin()` closes it, so a command that reads to EOF (`sort`, `cat`) finishes on its own instead of needing a kill. - `onStdout` / `onStderr` receive output as it arrives — separate streams unless `tty` is set, which allocates a real PTY sized by `rows`/`cols` with `resize()` for later changes. - `kill(signal)` sends an allowlisted signal; `terminate(graceMs)` asks the server for SIGTERM then SIGKILL after the grace; `wait()` resolves with the exit code; `close()` hangs up, which also stops the process. The client rejects an empty command locally, times out the handshake rather than hanging, validates signals before sending, and guards write/resize/kill after the session has ended. `ws` becomes a runtime dependency; a minimal structural type keeps `@types/ws` out of the published types. Node-only: authentication uses a request header, which a browser cannot set on a WebSocket handshake. Python has no counterpart yet. check_parity.py does not catch this — its extractor walks one level deep, so nested namespace methods like `exec.session` (and `files.stat`) are outside the gate — so the gap and the blind spot are both recorded in PARITY.md. --- .changeset/exec-session.md | 23 ++ packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md | 13 + packages/sdk/package.json | 4 +- .../src/__tests__/box-exec-session.test.ts | 298 ++++++++++++++++++ packages/sdk/src/client.ts | 184 +++++++++++ packages/sdk/src/index.ts | 2 + packages/sdk/src/types.ts | 59 ++++ pnpm-lock.yaml | 6 +- 8 files changed, 584 insertions(+), 5 deletions(-) create mode 100644 .changeset/exec-session.md create mode 100644 packages/sdk/src/__tests__/box-exec-session.test.ts diff --git a/.changeset/exec-session.md b/.changeset/exec-session.md new file mode 100644 index 00000000..dbcec66a --- /dev/null +++ b/.changeset/exec-session.md @@ -0,0 +1,23 @@ +--- +"@upstash/box": patch +--- + +Add `box.exec.session()` — a live, interactive command session over a WebSocket. + +Unlike `exec.command` / `exec.stream`, which run a command and hand back its +result, a session returns a handle to a *running* process: + +- `argv` runs a program directly (no shell); `cmd` runs one via `bash -lc`. +- `write()` sends stdin, `endStdin()` closes it so a command reading to EOF can + finish, and `onStdout` / `onStderr` receive output as it arrives (separate + streams unless `tty` is set). +- `tty` allocates a real PTY sized by `rows`/`cols`, with `resize()` for later + changes — enough for interactive programs and terminal UIs. +- `kill(signal)` sends an allowlisted signal; `terminate(graceMs)` asks the + server for SIGTERM then SIGKILL after the grace. +- `wait()` resolves with the exit code; `close()` hangs up, which also stops the + process. + +Node-only: authentication uses a request header, which browsers cannot set on a +WebSocket handshake. `ws` moves from a dev dependency to a runtime dependency; +the public types stay free of `@types/ws`. diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md b/packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md index b19dfe89..a962ea5f 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md +++ b/packages/python-sdk/PARITY.md @@ -27,6 +27,7 @@ JS `Run`/`StreamRun` → Python `Run`/`StreamRun` (+ `AsyncRun`/`AsyncStreamRun` | `exec.command` / `code` / `stream` / `streamCode` | `exec.command` / `code` / `stream` / `stream_code` | | `files.read/write/list/upload/download` | `files.read/write/list/upload/download` | | `files.stat/mkdir/rename/remove` | `files.stat/mkdir/rename/remove` | +| `exec.session` (live WebSocket session) | _not implemented_ — see below | | `git.clone/diff/status/commit/updateConfig/push/createPR/exec/checkout` | `git.clone/diff/status/commit/update_config/push/create_pr/exec/checkout` | | `schedule.exec/agent/list/get/update/pause/resume/delete` | same (snake) | | `skills.add/remove/list` | `skills.add/remove/list` | @@ -122,3 +123,15 @@ statics `create`, `from_snapshot`, `get_by_name`, `delete_boxes`, `helpers` → covered by `tests/helpers.py`; `box-instance` → `test_box_instance`; models → `test_models`; helpers/common → `test_common`. charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Closes the last namespace-level gap against @upstash/box. `exec.command` returns after a command finishes; `exec.session` returns as soon as it starts, so a caller can write to stdin, resize a PTY, and signal the process while it runs. session = await box.exec.session(argv=["sort"], on_stdout=chunks.append) await session.write("banana\napple\n") await session.end_stdin() assert await session.wait() == 0 `argv` runs a program with no shell and takes precedence over `cmd`, which goes through `bash -lc`. `tty=True` (with `rows`/`cols`) allocates a PTY sized correctly from the first read. `cwd` resolves against the box's current directory, and `env` overlays `KEY=VALUE` entries. The handle exposes `pid`, `exec_id`, `write`, `end_stdin`, `resize`, `kill`, `terminate`, `wait`, and `close`, and works as a context manager. The session owns the process: closing the handle or losing the connection kills the command. Both handles are hand-written in upstash_box/_exec_session.py rather than generated. The async handle pumps frames with an asyncio task and the sync handle with a reader thread, an asymmetry generate_sync.py cannot produce by token substitution; the generator maps the async names onto the sync pair instead. Frame construction, signal validation, and decoding are shared between them so the wire protocol has a single definition. The server's reply table is shared between the async and sync suites, holding both flavors to identical wire behavior. Pure protocol helpers (start frame assembly, signal normalization, URL scheme) are tested directly. Integration tests mirror the @upstash/box suite one-for-one against a real box, sharing a single box across the module: split streams with exit code, argv without a shell, cmd through one, stdin plus EOF, cwd and env overlay, blocked env keys, terminate, tree kill, PTY sizing with interactive input, long-lived round-trips, concurrency, env isolation, close() and context-manager teardown, local validation, and session writes seen through the files API. The sync smoke test gains a session round-trip so the reader thread is exercised against the real server too. Adds a module-scoped `module_opts` fixture for suites that share one box. --- .../tests/_async/test_exec_session.py | 347 ++++++++++++++++++ .../tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py | 207 +++++++++++ The backend already fails the handshake rather than starting a session it cannot signal, so make the client hold the same line instead of weakening the claim: a started frame without a usable pid now fails the handshake and closes the socket, in TypeScript and both Python flavors. Also documents where callbacks run. The async handle dispatches on the task pumping the socket and awaits async callbacks; the sync handle dispatches on the reader thread, so calling wait() from inside a callback deadlocks, because the exit it waits for can only arrive on the thread it is blocking. Moves the Python pid/exec_id docs onto class-level annotations. A string literal after an assignment in __init__ is discarded, so those docs reached neither help() nor an IDE. --- .../tests/_async/test_exec_session.py | 16 ++++++++- .../tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py | 16 ++++++++- .../python-sdk/tests/exec_session_server.py | 4 +++ .../python-sdk/upstash_box/_exec_session.py | 35 ++++++++++++++++--- .../src/__tests__/box-exec-session.test.ts | 19 ++++++++++ packages/sdk/src/client.ts | 15 +++++++- packages/sdk/src/types.ts | 7 ++-- 7 files changed, 101 insertions(+), 11 deletions(-) diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/tests/_async/test_exec_session.py b/packages/python-sdk/tests/_async/test_exec_session.py index 8ecc5128..b741c780 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/tests/_async/test_exec_session.py +++ b/packages/python-sdk/tests/_async/test_exec_session.py @@ -20,7 +20,13 @@ session_url, ) -_HANDSHAKE_FAILURES = ("__error__", "__exit__", "__close__") +_HANDSHAKE_FAILURES = ( + "__error__", + "__exit__", + "__close__", + "__zero_pid__", + "__no_pid__", +) @pytest.fixture @@ -186,6 +192,14 @@ async def test_start_frame_reaches_the_server_verbatim(ws_url): await handle.close() +@pytest.mark.parametrize("mode", ["__zero_pid__", "__no_pid__"]) +async def test_started_without_a_usable_pid_raises(ws_url, mode): + # A handle whose kill()/terminate() cannot reach the process is worse + # than no handle, so the handshake fails instead. + with pytest.raises(BoxError, match="without a usable pid"): + await open_session(ws_url, cmd=mode) + + async def test_handshake_error_frame_raises(ws_url): with pytest.raises(BoxError, match="boom"): await open_session(ws_url, cmd="__error__") diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py b/packages/python-sdk/tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py index 64b5b328..45d89d10 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py +++ b/packages/python-sdk/tests/_sync/test_exec_session_sync.py @@ -13,7 +13,13 @@ from upstash_box import BoxError from upstash_box._exec_session import build_start_frame, open_exec_session -_HANDSHAKE_FAILURES = ("__error__", "__exit__", "__close__") +_HANDSHAKE_FAILURES = ( + "__error__", + "__exit__", + "__close__", + "__zero_pid__", + "__no_pid__", +) @pytest.fixture @@ -107,6 +113,14 @@ def test_start_frame_reaches_the_server_verbatim(ws_url): handle.close() +@pytest.mark.parametrize("mode", ["__zero_pid__", "__no_pid__"]) +def test_started_without_a_usable_pid_raises(ws_url, mode): + # A handle whose kill()/terminate() cannot reach the process is worse + # than no handle, so the handshake fails instead. + with pytest.raises(BoxError, match="without a usable pid"): + open_session(ws_url, cmd=mode) + + def test_handshake_error_frame_raises(ws_url): with pytest.raises(BoxError, match="boom"): open_session(ws_url, cmd="__error__") diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/tests/exec_session_server.py b/packages/python-sdk/tests/exec_session_server.py index 3632d19f..e2977aba 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/tests/exec_session_server.py +++ b/packages/python-sdk/tests/exec_session_server.py @@ -26,6 +26,10 @@ def start_replies(start: Dict[str, Any]) -> List[Dict[str, Any]]: return [{"type": "exit", "code": 7}] if cmd == "__close__": return [] + if cmd == "__zero_pid__": + return [{"type": "started", "pid": 0, "execId": "exec-abc"}] + if cmd == "__no_pid__": + return [{"type": "started", "execId": "exec-abc"}] return [STARTED, {"type": "stdout", "data": b64(json.dumps(start, sort_keys=True))}] diff --git a/packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/_exec_session.py b/packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/_exec_session.py index ae5987f2..b3a314cd 100644 --- a/packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/_exec_session.py +++ b/packages/python-sdk/upstash_box/_exec_session.py @@ -110,9 +110,14 @@ def _handshake_error(frame: Dict[str, Any]) -> BoxError: def _started_fields(frame: Dict[str, Any]) -> "tuple[int, str]": + """Read the started frame. Before start it rejected session() and left the connection open, leaking the socket for a session the caller never received. After start it settled wait() with -1 while the socket stayed live, which breaks the handle's ownership contract: the caller sees the session as finished, but the connection keeping the process alive is still open. Every other terminal path (exit, handshake timeout, unusable pid) already closed. The Python client already closed on both paths, so this is TypeScript catching up rather than a shared bug. Adds regression tests on both sides: the two new TypeScript tests hang and fail without the fix, and the Python ones assert the behavior that was already correct so the two stay in step. Both flavors now compute a single deadline before the loop and pass only the remaining duration to each receive. TypeScript was already correct here: it arms one timer for the whole handshake.
