Describe the solution you'd like

I use memos in a single-user instance, as a memo pad for my thoughts and ideas over time. It's awesome, but in this single-user environment reactions are kinda useless.

However, there's one way in which they excel: compared to hashtags, reactions are really easy to add and remove from memos. It'd be cool if there was a way to use reactions to filter the list of memos shown, exactly as works with hashtags right now.

Adding this feature (toggle-able in settings like how locations work) would open up the reactions and make them useful for a large variety of purposes. In my single-user scenario, I'd love to have reactions to stand in for "⭐favorite" and "🔔reminder" hashtags. Favorite would let me pull up some of my best memos quickly, and reminder could be for things I need to remember right now (and would be easy to remove when they're no longer relevant).

And reactions-like-tags are not just useful for single-users! Only an admin user can edit someone else's memos and add a new hashtag, but anyone can react to a memo. Picture a memos install being used for project management, where custom reactions like "🔥needs fix", "👷working on it", "🚢ready to ship", could be applied to and removed from memos posted by others. Or something like "post flair", where other users tag a post as "🎮games" or "📰news" or whatever after the fact.

All these things could be done if only we could filter memos by what reactions they have.

Type of feature

User Interface (UI)

Summary

  • Reactions are easier to quickly add and remove than hashtags
  • Reactions can be applied by users other than the memo author / admins
  • Reactions appear visually distinct on the memo
  • Due to the above, filter-by-reactions could allow them to fill a number of roles that hashtags aren't suited for.
