css file import error

Summary

My codebase started to throw css import error, although the css still works but how can I remove this error message?

this even happens when I create a fresh nextjs project. I have not made any changes in codebase. but recently I updated node.js to v22 from v20. this might be the reason?

Create a file named globals.d.ts (or css.d.ts) in the src folder or in the root directory of the project. Add: declare module '*.css'; Explanation: this tells TypeScript that any import ending in .css is a valid module.

Apparently, Next.js has been hiding such imports for a long time behind their declarations, but in recent updates they have abandoned this. There are more questions for the developers, but the fix above is absolutely justified :)

UPD: most likely, the problem is with updating TypeScript 6.0.0, you can roll back to 5.9.2 (SferaDev)

Using node 22.18.0 and a fresh create-next-app, I can't reproduce this. What steps did you follow when creating the create-next-app?
Could you share some screenshots of what's happening?

@icyJoseph I can repro the problem in VSCode (using tailwind template create-next-app) when using it with TypeScript insiders 6.0.0-dev-20250928, gone with 5.9.2

It is a TS issue then. Perhaps switch to use the project's TypeScript version. https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/config/typescript#ide-plugin

You shouldn't need an additional file.

I can't reproduce this issue - not even in canary. I don't think next-intl has anything to do with this though. What TS version do you have? Did you see the error in your Text Editor only? Or also terminal while running commands?

the error is only in text editor. no error in terminal, also no error while creating build

Likely that your editor is not picking up the project's TS version, but the version it has built-in. If its VSCode, this link should help https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/config/typescript#ide-plugin

yes it was vscode issue. the editor was using version 6. I downgraded it to v5.9 and it is fixed
