Reading systems can provide AI access through the Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) concept. Typically, the process involves a user adding an API key, after which they can benefit from the reading system's contextual prompting capabilities.

This comes with issues related to the use that can be made of the content by the AI, depending on the type of contract behind the API key. Typically, free access usually comes with the exploitation of the content for training purposes, which could be in contradiction with the publisher's intention to restrict text and data mining.

To prevent such risks and provide a more accurate AI service, a publisher could embed tokens in a specific AI system with which a trade agreement could be established.

The idea was formulated on July 17th, publishing community group plenary, AI use cases and technical considerations in Thorium Reader, an open source reading system
