Q on wind parameter #379

Description

@amilan17

Details

In the Manual on the WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WMO-No. 485), the “magnitude of wind shear” is described as the magnitude of the vector difference between two pressure levels (e.g., 850 hPa and 250 hPa, or 925 hPa and 700 hPa).
This quantity is assumed to be expressed in units of m s⁻¹, with the first and second fixed surfaces corresponding to the respective pressure levels (e.g., 850 hPa and 250 hPa).
However, we have not been able to identify an appropriate parameter in GRIB2 (FM 92) that directly corresponds to this definition.

We would very much appreciate your guidance on how this quantity should be represented in GRIB2 format.
