How do I get it to show custom armors?

I use Gen's Villager Hats and their hats are reskinned leather helmets. The tooltip for those hats show the leather helmet instead of the actual hat. How do I get it to show the custom texture, instead of the leather helmet?

I don't know how Gen's Villager Hats implements model rendering. It have no open source code. this may be difficult.
