Sometimes plank acts up and doesn't recognize open windows, leaving no way to pin apps, especially on barebones WMs that don't have a proper app launcher. What would be good is to be able to pin apps directly from the Applications docklet, either by dragging them to the dock or rightclicking app in question and using "pin to dock" option.
