LaTeX does not always render

For instance, in this Zulip message, the segment $$G^*: [C^{op}, \mathrm{Set}] \to [J^{op}, \mathrm{Set}]$$ does not render, but instead just displays as text with a blue background.

Thanks for the report! It's currently expected that the app doesn't render all TeX expressions, and falls back to the TeX source for those it doesn't yet support. Details here: #46 (comment)

I plan to make a release today that will add support for a lot more TeX expressions (details at #mobile-team > KaTeX survey results @ 💬), with #1601. It looks like that will in fact cover the example you quoted — and all the other expressions in that thread, except the ones with \bigsqcup at the very beginning.

I'll close this thread in favor of #46 (which in turn we'll replace later with specific issues for the remaining areas).
