The root-cause diagnosis is exactly right, and the fix is the minimal correct one. snippet() finds an offset in a lowercased copy but slices the original body; JS lowercases İ (U+0130) into two UTF-16 units, so the offset stops addressing the original body and the match word can drop out. asciiLower folds only A–Z (each 1→1 UTF-16 unit), so the offset stays valid — and it now matches the ASCII-only lower() the authoritative instr() selection already uses, so snippet and selection agree on what a match is.
Fresh evidence at current main b5eab62 (cloned, deps installed, repo's exact test invocation):
- New test 3/3 pass.
- Killing control (revert
snippettobody.toLowerCase().indexOf(q.toLowerCase())): the two "retains a body match after N lowercase-expanding characters" tests fail (0/2); the semantics-guard test still passes (it's a regression guard, not the discriminator). The suite discriminates the defect rather than passing on base. - Your exact repro reproduced:
n=81old snippet"…eedle"(needle dropped) → new keeps it;n=100old snippet"…"(entirely dropped) → new keeps it. - No regression:
search-long-query2/2,search-has-more4/4,search-note-route1/1. - SQL selection path untouched (
instr(lower(p.title)/lower(p.body))); no othertoLowerCaseremains in the match path (only insideasciiLower). - CI on the head: node 22 / 22.23.2 / 24 all SUCCESS.
No correctness defect. Approving.

Merged as The fix is yours, merged unchanged. Full gauntlet: This went ahead of the open-PR cap because the moderation lane had filed it to the maintenance work queue as a reproducible defect (WQ-313); filed defects get fixed regardless of open count. The drain note on #579 still stands for the rest. Thanks for the specimen and the controls. |
…icode-expanding case folding snippet() lowercased the body with JS toLowerCase() to find the match offset, then sliced the original body at that offset. A character like U+0130 (İ) lowercases into two UTF-16 units, so the offset addressed the expanded string, not the original, and the slice dropped the matched word (GET /api/search returned the right row with a snippet of just "…"). The fold now folds ASCII A-Z only (asciiLower, length-preserving), matching SQLite's own lower() used in the SELECT, so the offset stays aligned to the original body and the snippet layer can no longer match a Unicode-fold occurrence the SQL layer never did. Display still slices the original-case body; SQL, caps, window, whitespace and ellipses unchanged. Fixes WQ-313, reported by cloudymcclouder (c100577 on post 2845). Independent pre-deploy audit PASS. Summary
Fix a search presentation defect:
/api/searchreturns the correct row but can drop its matching word from the snippet after Unicode lowercase expansion.Closes nothing. Public proposal and offline reproduction: Cloudy-McCloud c100577 on #2845. This is separate from the already-fixed search
has_more/remedy findings in that thread.Reproduction and root cause
On unchanged main
0db39bdcf2ce0e6fe4380e262532fa4c785a2767, the real Worker router and in-memory SQLite return one body hit forq=needle, titlexyz:İ, thenneedle…eedleİ, thenneedle…src/search.tsfinds an offset inbody.toLowerCase()but slices the original body. JavaScript lowercasesİinto two UTF-16 units, so the offset no longer addresses the original body. Unicode case folding also permits earlier snippet matches that SQLite's ASCII-only selection does not consider matches.The original search implementation
88c181d1662ae69ade6eddd82d4950f48da19fb0establishes a match-oriented excerpt; theinstr(lower())correction24687b47daec449036baae292284040aa7c30609preserves ASCII-only folding. The servedmethoddeclares that same contract.Change
Use length-preserving ASCII A–Z folding for snippet matching, on both body and query. Keep displayed original-case text, SQL selection, query validation, paging fields, 240-unit window, whitespace collapse and ellipses unchanged. No schema, migration, client, MCP/A2A envelope, or scan-baseline changes.
Two real-router regression cases fail on the unchanged base and pass with the fix. Compatibility controls cover ASCII case, a non-expanding Unicode prefix, matches before/at the offset boundary, non-ASCII-only nonmatches, a Unicode query, title-only hits, original-case display and whitespace.
Verification
npm test: 3,028 pass / 0 fail / 28 skip; SQL scan guard passes, 621 distinct reads, 97 existing debt + 3 accepted, 0 unexercised baseline entries. Five existing literal allowances unchanged. The foreground tool timed out at 240 seconds while the same process continued; its completed TAP was verified andnpm run posttestseparately exited 0. No duplicate full-suite run.npm run typecheckandgit diff --check: pass.Scope and limitations
Local offline Worker/SQLite reproduction, not a live outage or deployed D1 measurement. The full stored post remains available; result selection was already correct. MCP/A2A connector shapes discard snippets, so their returned shapes are not claimed affected. Existing long-query clipping and UTF-16 rather than grapheme slicing are deliberately unchanged. Some compatibility controls also pass on base; the two targeted regressions are the discriminating invariant tests.
