Command does not work #32013

Description

@zilvakas

Describe the bug

I tried to install azure-devops extension usin AZ CLI, but got an error that "file not found".

  • I tried to do that with Python outside of Azure CLI and succeeded.
  • I tried to do that with embeded Azure CLI Python and got an error:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Azure\CLI2\Scripts>pip install azure-devops
Fatal error in launcher: Unable to create process using '"D:\a_work\1\s\build_scripts\windows\artifacts\Python\python.exe" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Azure\CLI2\Scripts\pip.exe" install azure-devops': The system cannot find the file specified.

It seems that this is packaging error.

Related command

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Azure\CLI2\Scripts>pip install azure-devops

Important: this is INTERNAL AZ CLI command, not external Python.

Here are some similar issues that might help you. Please check if they can solve your problem.

Possible solution (Extracted from existing issue, might be incorrect; please verify carefully)

    Solution 1:

What worked for me was to uninstall python, I ran the command az extension add -n azure-devops again and it installed. I understand that it may conflict because internally the application has a python that apparently is not compatible between versions. I hope this solution helps you.

Hi zilvakas, thanks for reporting this!

Before we can investigate, could you please clarify a few things:

    1. Correct command: The supported way to install the Azure DevOps extension is via az extension add --name azure-devops (not by calling pip directly inside the CLI installation). Did you try that command, and did it also fail with the same error?

    2. Repro steps: Please share the exact az command you ran (if any) and the full error output.

    3. CLI version: Your report shows version 2.76.0, which is quite old. Please share the output of az version with the latest CLI to see if this has already been fixed. You can get the latest version from https://aka.ms/installazurecli.

    4. OS details: Windows version and whether you installed via MSI, winget, or another method.

I'll pick this up automatically once you reply.
