Azure CLI package can't be installed on Ubuntu 26.04 - no such package in repo #34000
Starting 2026.08.27 official way to install Azure CLI package on Ubuntu 26.04 does not work. Looks like the package has been deleted from according repo.
Issue:apt-get install --assume-yes azure-cli fails on Ubuntu 26.04 (codename "resolute") with E: Unable to locate package azure-cli.
Root cause: This is not a defect in the Azure CLI source code. The reporter's own linked evidence shows the Microsoft APT repository (https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/azure-cli/dists/resolute/main/binary-arm64/) does not yet have a resolute (Ubuntu 26.04) distribution published. Azure CLI is installed via a pre-built .deb package pulled from that hosted repository, not built/packaged from anything in this GitHub repository — there is no application code change here that would add a missing distribution channel to an external package feed.
Why no code fix applies: The azure-cli repository does not control the publishing pipeline that populates packages.microsoft.com. Adding resolute support requires the package-release/build pipeline (owned by the release engineering team) to publish binaries for the new Ubuntu codename, which is outside the scope of a source PR here.
Recommendation: Route to the release/packaging team responsible for the packages.microsoft.com/repos/azure-cli feed to add resolute (Ubuntu 26.04) to the list of published distributions. In the meantime, users on Ubuntu 26.04 can use the alternative install script or install via pip/pipx as a workaround.
No Copilot code-fix task is being started for this issue since it is an external packaging/distribution gap, not a source-code bug.
The title of this issue is misleading, but I am also facing the same issue when building my custom Devcontainer image, that is based on Ubuntu 26.04. Part of the baked toolchain is az-cli, which was provisioned as expected up until today.

This is also affecting image builds from the GitHub actions runner-images repo - tests fail at the powershell-cli install stage and builds are failing.
Ubuntu 26.04 is not supported for azure-cli versions 2.89.1 and earlier we are adding support in 2.90.0 which will be released tomorrow.
Unfortunately, a change required prior to the release date resulted in the install script no-longer falling back to the version of azure cli built for Ubuntu 22.04 completely blocking the install on Ubuntu 26.04 we will do our best to prevent similar issues happening in the future.
