The backend follows a layered architecture [21]: controllers handle HTTP concerns, services own business logic, and repositories provide data access. The frontend organizes code into core/ (singleton services, guards, interceptors) and features/ (route-scoped modules) [22].

πŸ”§ Prerequisites

Before getting started, ensure the following are installed:

Requirement Version Notes
Java JDK 21 Required for backend [10]
Node.js + npm 18+ Required for frontend [23]
Docker & Docker Compose Latest Required for containerized setup
PostgreSQL 16 Only needed for non-Docker local dev
Maven 3.9+ Only needed for non-Docker local dev [12]

πŸš€ Quick Start with Docker

The fastest way to run the full stack locally. All services β€” PostgreSQL, backend, and frontend β€” start with a single command. [8]

1. Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/your-org/somiishop-scaffold.git
cd somiishop-scaffold

2. Create your .env file

Create a .env file in the project root. The required and optional variables are listed below (see Environment Variables for the full reference).

# Required
STRIPE_API_KEY=sk_test_...
STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET=whsec_...
JWT_SECRET=<your-256-bit-secret>

# Database (defaults shown)
DB_NAME=somiishop
DB_USER=somiishop
DB_PASSWORD=somiishop_dev

# Optional β€” AWS S3 image storage
AWS_S3_BUCKET=somiishop-uploads
AWS_REGION=us-east-1

Generating a JWT secret: Run openssl rand -base64 64 to generate a suitable 512-bit secret.

3. Start all services

docker-compose up --build

Docker Compose starts PostgreSQL first (with a health check), waits for it to be ready, then starts the backend, and finally the frontend. [24]

4. Verify everything is running

Service URL
Frontend http://localhost:4200
Backend API http://localhost:8080
PostgreSQL localhost:5432
curl http://localhost:8080/actuator/health
# Expected: {"status":"UP"}

5. Stop services

docker-compose down          # Stop containers
docker-compose down -v # Stop and remove volumes (clears database)

πŸ’» Local Development

For faster iteration cycles without Docker, run the backend and frontend directly on your machine.

Backend

macOS (Homebrew):

brew services start postgresql@16
createdb somiishop
createuser somiishop

Start the backend:

cd backend
mvn spring-boot:run

Flyway will automatically apply all pending migrations on startup. [9] The API will be available at http://localhost:8080.

Frontend

cd frontend
npm install
ng serve

The Angular dev server starts at http://localhost:4200 with hot-reload enabled. [25] The frontend is configured to connect to the backend at http://localhost:8080/api/v1. [26]

βš™οΈ Environment Variables

All backend configuration is driven by environment variables, with sensible defaults defined in application.yml. [27]

  • orders β†’ buyer_id, status, created_at
  • payments β†’ order_id, status
  • reviews β†’ product_id, reviewer_id

Connection pool

HikariCP is configured with a maximum of 10 connections and a minimum of 5 idle connections, with a 30-second connection timeout. [9]

πŸ› οΈ Development Commands

Backend

cd backend

# Run the application (hot-reload via Spring DevTools)
mvn spring-boot:run

# Build a production JAR (skipping tests)
mvn clean package -DskipTests

# Run unit and integration tests
mvn test

# Reset and re-run all Flyway migrations
mvn flyway:clean flyway:migrate

The backend Dockerfile uses a two-stage build: Maven 3.9 + Eclipse Temurin 21 (Alpine) for building, and Eclipse Temurin 21 JRE (Alpine) for the runtime image. [61]

Frontend

cd frontend

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Start the dev server (http://localhost:4200, with hot-reload)
npm start

# Production build (output to dist/somiishop-frontend)
npm run build

# Run unit tests (Karma + Jasmine)
npm test

# Run end-to-end tests
npm run e2e

# Lint the codebase
npm run lint

The frontend Dockerfile uses node:18-alpine and starts the Angular dev server bound to 0.0.0.0 with 2000 ms polling for file changes inside Docker. [62] The production build targets dist/somiishop-frontend. [63]

πŸ§ͺ Testing

Backend

Integration tests use Testcontainers to spin up a real PostgreSQL 16 instance, ensuring migrations and queries run against an authentic database. [14]

cd backend
mvn test

Frontend

Unit tests use Karma 6.4.0 as the test runner and Jasmine 5.1.0 as the assertion framework, with code coverage via karma-coverage. [19]

cd frontend
npm test # Run unit tests once
npm run e2e       # Run end-to-end tests

TypeScript strict mode is enforced across the entire frontend codebase, including strictInjectionParameters and strictTemplates for Angular-specific checks. [17]

πŸ” Troubleshooting

Database won't connect

# Check if PostgreSQL is running and accepting connections
pg_isready -h localhost -p 5432

# Check Docker container health
docker-compose ps
docker logs somiishop-db

Ensure DB_HOST is set to db (the Docker service name) when running inside Docker, or localhost for local development. [29]

Port already in use

# Find and kill the process using port 8080
lsof -i :8080
kill -9 <PID>

# Or for the frontend port
lsof -i :4200
kill -9 <PID>

Flyway migration failed

If the database schema gets into an inconsistent state, reset and re-run all migrations:

cd backend
mvn flyway:clean flyway:migrate

⚠️ flyway:clean drops all database objects. Never run this against a production database.

Frontend can't reach the API

Verify the API_BASE_URL environment variable is set correctly [26]:

  • Docker: http://localhost:8080/api/v1
  • Local dev: Ensure the backend is running on port 8080 and CORS allows http://localhost:4200 [28]

Stripe webhook not firing locally

Use the Stripe CLI to forward events to your local server:

stripe listen --forward-to localhost:8080/api/v1/payments/webhook

The CLI will print a webhook signing secret β€” use that value as STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET.
