Leaving Github as a social thing

As for 2025-06-15 I am not going to use Github's social features ever again. This means:

  • I just unstarred all my starred repositories
  • I just unfollowed every profile I used to follow ; sorry folks, don't take it personally 🤗
  • Following me is now completely useless, because you won't ever see my face in your Github timeline again

Why?

You know the drill. Github is owned by Microsoft:

  • Microsoft is a USA-based company
    • The USA have laws that empowers the government to make tech companies use their technology against their users ; the kind of legal measures that you don't want to see "fall into the wrong hands"
    • Some "wrong hands" are now in charge, my friend
  • Microsoft, which already had a long history of being a despicable company, recently took things several steps further, by:
    • Pushing useless "AI" features everywhere, with huge negative environmental/social/societal impact
    • Taking the opportunity of "AI" to accelerate planned obsolescence of tens of millions of perfectly functional computers
    • Leveraging "security" to spy on Windows users at an unprecedented level

Why stay on Github then?

Because I have no choice:

  • My clients repositories are here
  • The open-source software repositories I contribute to are still, inexplicably, here

What can other people do?

  • If your an open-source software maintainer, please, pretty please 🙏, migrate your repositories to another platform
  • If you're a regular Github user:
    • Don't use social features
    • Explore other platforms
    • Encourage your favorite open-source maintainers to migrate their repositories to another platform
