CaveInteraction

C++ Framework for Stereoscopic CAVE Rendering & Multi-Device Interaction

Language VTK Qt Hardware Hardware

Overview

CaveInteraction is a C++ framework designed to bridge the gap between traditional Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVE) and modern interaction hardware. Leveraging the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) and Qt, the application enables high-fidelity stereoscopic rendering tailored for multi-surface projection environments.

The core innovation of this repository is the flexible integration of various tracking systems—ranging from industry-standard HTC Vive Pro 2 controllers to custom Arduino-based motion controllers. This allows users to navigate and interact with complex 3D datasets and multidimensional volume data using natural, high-precision interaction paradigms within a stationary immersive room.

Featured Applications

CaveInteraction serves as the foundation for various research applications in the field of immersive interaction:

1. A Novel Interaction Paradigm for Cave Automatic Virtual Environments

This framework's core rendering and interaction logic was established in the following research and available on the main branch:

Andrea Stocker Braza (2025). A Novel Interaction Paradigm for Cave Automatic Virtual Environments. Bachelor Thesis. University of Passau, Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, Chair of Cognitive Sensor Systems.

2. Natural Interaction for Immersive Environments Using an Arduino Motion Controller

This application extends the framework by introducing a custom Arduino-based motion controller for intuitive volume data manipulation and can be found in the controller branch:

Niklas Oswald (2025). Natural interaction for immersive environments using an Arduino motion controller. Bachelor Thesis. University of Passau, Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, Chair of Cognitive Sensor Systems.
