News Releases

To create a news releases section for each new year:

  1. Create new site section:

    • Name: 202(X) News Releases
    • Pretty URL: 202(X)
    • Landing Page: leave blank for now. Need to first create a mini landing page and then add it here as the landing page of the site section.
    • Navigation Display Options: set all to hide
    • Save new site section and rearrange order of taxonomy items if needed
  2. Create new 202(X) Mini Landing Page:

    • Site Section: 202(X) News Releases
    • Pretty URL: leave empty as this will be the landing page
    • Page Title, Browser Title, and Card Title: 202(X) News Releases
    • Meta Description: News releases from the National Cancer Institute for the year 202(X).
    • Under CONTENTS, add a Content Block. Copy, paste and edit the source code from the Content Block on the last year's Mini Landing page.
    • Add a Dynamic List:
      • List Title: Leave empty
      • Source View: Press Release
      • Display: Archive Block
      • Options: 20 Items per page; Default Pagination; Argument: 2020; Leave 'Include View Title' unchecked
    • Save draft mini landing page
  3. Update site section created in #1 to set the landing page field with the new mini landing page you just created. Save.

  4. Update site section of press release that's in draft so that it lives under /news-events/press-releases/202(X)

  5. Just before the press release goes live, push the new mini landing page live. Then push the press release live.

  6. Update News & Events landing page links to point to new 202(X) mini landing page:

    • "All NCI News >" link at the bottom of the page
    • 'News Releases' link in the right rail Media Resources card
  7. Edit Press/News Releases site section. Change landing page from last year to 202(X) News Releases. This is so the left navigation ("News Releases") links to the newly created page.

  8. Update mega menu raw html block to add new year under All News Releases. Make sure All News Releases links to the newly added year's page.

    • After mega menu is updated in the CMS, work with devs to clear the cache. Remove the oldest year's page, as we have a rule to retire news content older than 5 years.
  9. Update the "manual navigation" at the top of each mini landing page for each of the previous years to include a link to the newly created page. Remove the oldest year from the manual navigation (an impact analysis report will need to be run on the press releases from that year before they can be removed from the site).

  10. Update English and/or Spanish sitemap page to reflect changes.

Removing news content after 5 years

Our rule has been to retire news-related content after 5 years. As a new year's news content added, follow the steps in bullets #8 and #9 to remove links pointing to the oldest news page from the mega menu and tabular navigation on all news mini landing pages.

Then:

  • Run an impact analysis report for the oldest year's news releases
  • Run a traffic report by month in the last 12 months
  • Analyze removal impact and make necessary content updates and/or create redirects before archiving pages
