fix: reuse context windows only for the same route and reject media an interface cannot send 🤖🤖🤖 - #497
Splits general runtime fixes out of #474 so they can be reviewed on their own. Lands before the nooa connect work in #474. None of these changes need Connect.
Context windows follow the route
A model entry's context_window is reused only when the model, endpoint (api_base/base_url), client type, custom_llm_provider, client object and credential scope all match.
Changing any of these, per call or when the client is created, drops the old window.
A directly built client takes a registry window only when every compatible registry entry agrees on it.
What changes for users: if you run one model name behind several gateways or keys, you no longer get a token budget from the wrong endpoint. Passing an explicit api_key to a registry alias now needs an explicit context_window.
Media an interface can't send is rejected before the request
Native Anthropic Messages and OpenAI Responses only carry images and PDFs.
An enabled audio or video attachment on those routes now raises a clear ValueError that names the interface. Before, it was sent anyway or silently dropped.
Disabled attachments are still replaced by a short removal notice. Text-only calls and Chat audio/video are unchanged.
audio_url blocks now count as audio.
The interface comes from the actual LiteLLM dispatch, not from api_style or the model name.
Gateway settings are passed on
Registry entries now pass timeout, base_url and custom_llm_provider to the client.
The client's own HTTP connection now honours base_url and custom_llm_provider.
What changes for users: gateways configured with base_url or an explicit provider now get the hardened, pooled transport and their configured timeout.
Tests
New: test_registry_route_context.py and test_native_media_policy.py.
New checks in test_media_inputs.py and test_completion_transport_overrides.py.
One Connect test fixture (test_connect_typed_media.py) now declares its context window, because it passes an explicit key.
In a clean, key-free Python 3.12 environment with the locked dependencies: the full CI unit-test selection gives 10,616 passed, 0 failed; tests/unifiedllm plus the CLI tests give 2,817 passed. Lint, format and license-header checks pass.

Bug Fixes
Anthropic Messages and Responses requests support image and PDF inputs; enabled audio or video inputs are rejected before a request is sent.
Unsupported media is rejected according to the selected interface. Disabled attachments are filtered and replaced with a notice, without changing the original message history or media objects.
Custom endpoint, provider, and timeout settings are honored for synchronous and asynchronous requests.
Context-window settings are reused only when the client’s route is compatible.
Documentation
Updated media-input guidance to explain supported formats and backend-specific behavior.
…n interface cannot send 🤖🤖🤖
These are general runtime fixes split out of the `nooa connect` work so they
can land on their own first.
Context windows follow the route, not the model name. A client now reuses a
configured context_window only when the model, endpoint (api_base/base_url),
client type, custom_llm_provider, client object and credential scope all
match the entry that declared it. Per-call or factory overrides that change
the route drop the old window instead of silently borrowing it, and direct
clients only pick up a registry window when every compatible entry agrees.
Anyone running one model name behind several gateways or keys is affected:
token budgets no longer come from the wrong endpoint.
Media an interface cannot send is rejected before any HTTP request. Native
Anthropic Messages and Responses only implement image and PDF inputs, so an
enabled audio or video attachment on those routes now raises a clear
ValueError locally instead of being dropped or sent as an invalid request.
Disabled attachments are still filtered first (including top-level audio or
video items), text-only calls are unchanged, Chat routes keep sending
input_audio and video_url, and audio_url blocks now count as audio. The
interface is resolved from the actual LiteLLM dispatch, never from api_style
or the model name.
Registry entries now forward timeout, base_url and custom_llm_provider to
the client, and the owned HTTP client honours base_url and
custom_llm_provider when it builds the SDK client. Users who configure a
gateway with base_url or an explicit provider get requests sent there over
the hardened, pooled transport with their configured timeout.

branch builds on it. Connect-only tests that lived in the shared files move to
test_registry_chat_template_kwargs.py and

Good question. The ternary didn't explain itself, so I've changed it in 9f06160.
project_chat_turn is only used by CompletionClient. LiteLLM sends a CompletionClient request either as native Anthropic Messages (provider anthropic) or as OpenAI-compatible Chat (every other provider; LiteLLM translates Chat for Bedrock, Vertex and others). That's why the alternative is chat. ResponsesClient turns don't come through here: they're projected in response_parts.project_turn, which passes interface="responses".
The rule now lives in one function, media_policy.interface_for_provider, which both this call and resolved_input_interface use. Its docstring and an inline comment here state the Responses split explicitly. 🤖🤖🤖
This branch handles a message that is itself an attachment item, which Responses input allows at the top level (for example {"type": "input_image", ...}). It only replaced audio and video. A disabled image or PDF item at the top level was passed through and sent: I checked input_image, image_url and input_file (PDF), and all three came through unchanged.
It now replaces any disabled top-level attachment with the removal notice, the same rule already used for blocks inside content lists. New test: test_disabled_top_level_attachment_items_become_notices covers image, image_url, PDF, audio and video. The filter_media_messages docstring now lists the three places it checks. 🤖🤖🤖

Rewritten in 9f06160. The docstring now says what guard_native_media does and why:
What it checks: the native content of a replayed assistant turn, before the turn is sent again.
Why it can only raise: that content is the provider's own message. It is replayed as one unit and can't be partly edited, so disabled media can't be filtered out of it the way filter_media_messages filters ordinary messages.
The two checks, in order:
Disabled media raises ReasoningReplayError; the caller must replay a portable version of the turn instead. enabled=None skips this check.
Media the interface can't send raises ValueError (see nooa.media_policy). 🤖🤖🤖
…a and route rules 🤖🤖🤖
filter_media_messages replaced a disabled top-level attachment item only for
audio and video, so a disabled image or PDF sent as its own Responses input
item was passed through. Any disabled top-level attachment is now replaced by
a notice. The Anthropic-or-Chat choice for CompletionClient lives in one
helper, media_policy.interface_for_provider, used by chat_parts and the
interface resolver. Docstrings and comments in media_policy, media_inputs,
route_identity, registry and unifiedllm now state plainly what each check
does and why. 🤖🤖🤖

…endpoint key 🤖🤖🤖
client_from_config kept a configured api_base when the caller overrode only
base_url (and the reverse), so the owned SDK client could still send requests
to the old endpoint. Overriding either spelling now drops both configured
values. The route comparison that decides whether to keep context_window no
longer includes a completion entry's endpoint key, which is never sent, so such
entries keep their window. Addresses CodeRabbit review on #497. 🤖🤖🤖

Honor per-call api_base overrides of configured base_url.
When a client stores base_url=old_url, a later call with api_base=new_url retains both aliases. The completion path sends both values to LiteLLM without normalization.
The Responses path is more direct: its normalization copies base_url into api_base, so the stored base_url overwrites the per-call api_base. Apply endpoint-alias replacement during per-call merging. Add mock-transport coverage for both clients.

A client configured with base_url and called with api_base (or the reverse)
kept both values. LiteLLM then received two endpoints, and Responses requests
copy base_url over api_base, so the configured endpoint replaced the per-call
override. _prepare_call_config now drops the inherited other spelling when a
call overrides one of them. Addresses CodeRabbit review on #497. 🤖🤖🤖

@coderabbitai The outside-diff comment in review 5671735874 (per-call api_base overrides of a configured base_url) is valid. It's fixed in 328dac5.
UnifiedLLM._prepare_call_config now drops the other endpoint spelling inherited from the client config when a call overrides api_base or base_url. So LiteLLM gets one endpoint, and Responses normalization can no longer copy the stored base_url over the per-call api_base.
New test: test_per_call_endpoint_override_replaces_the_other_spelling. It covers CompletionClient and ResponsesClient in both directions.
I didn't add a mock-transport test. Per-call endpoint overrides deliberately bypass the client's owned HTTP pool, so a mock would need a separate harness, and it would test LiteLLM's dispatch rather than this merge. 🤖🤖🤖
@furgalep Thanks. I checked the implementation and the regression test.
UnifiedLLM._prepare_call_config now removes the inherited endpoint alias when the call supplies only the other alias. The test covers CompletionClient and ResponsesClient in both directions. It also checks that calls without an override retain the configured endpoint.
This addresses the endpoint-merge concern. The focused regression test is sufficient for this fix; I do not require a mock-transport test. I inspected the code but did not run the tests.

…lings in step 🤖🤖🤖
An api_base=None override cleared the configured base_url, so a request and its
credentials could go to the provider's default endpoint instead of the
configured gateway. None endpoint overrides are now ignored, both per call and
in client_from_config. A non-None override of one spelling now replaces every
configured spelling with the new URL instead of dropping one: an override equal
to the configured URL no longer looks like a route change (which disabled
media), and LiteLLM's async provider detection still finds base_url.

Exclude the unforwarded endpoint from direct-client route lookup.
If a completion entry has api_base set to the client's URL and a different endpoint value, client_from_config ignores endpoint, but this lookup passes it to same_context_route. The matcher sees two registry endpoints and rejects the entry. A direct client then loses the matching registry context_window and falls back to model metadata or None. Compare only settings forwarded for completion and Responses clients; keep endpoint for decision routes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Based on learnings, completion and Responses entries must exclude the registry-only endpoint key from route identity; decision routes must retain it.

When a direct client matches one registry entry with a positive context_window and another matching entry without one, the lookup ignores the unknown value and returns the positive value.
