What does this PR do?

A single lone UTF-16 surrogate anywhere in the rendered context makes every LLM request fail to serialize:

LLM API error after 3 retries. Original error: UnicodeEncodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't encode character '\ud800' in position 5825: surrogates not allowed

The agent can't recover from this on its own. The bad text is in snapshot-backed state, so every retry and every --resume rebuilds the same unencodable request.

How it happened (Garph, session e5945025): Garph wrote a test probe into a todo note with one backslash: comments.append('... ::1%\ud800.synthetic-secret ...'). Python turned that into a real U+D800. Three minutes later Garph activated that todo, and Atom's todo_status block, which shows the active item's last 8 notes, put the surrogate into every prompt. Every turn after that failed. Cell stdout was never affected, because _truncating_stream already encodes with errors="replace". The context blocks had no equivalent guard.

Fix: lone surrogates in rendered content are escaped as the text \udXXX, so the model sees what was written. Native replay data is never rewritten.

  • render_context() escapes each block's content before the context budget and stats are computed, so they measure the text that is sent. It then passes the neutral RenderedMessage list through _utf8_safe() for the remaining fields (tool calls, images, parts). This covers context blocks (any Context(expr=...), e.g. todo_status), serialized events and tool results (e.g. filenames from os.listdir with non-UTF-8 names), and the tracing journal, which hashes result.messages with content.encode("utf-8") and would fail the same way. Dict-valued tool arguments are left alone: they reach the request and the journal only through json.dumps, whose ASCII escapes keep them exact and encodable.
  • project_turn() and project_chat_turn() check a turn's native payloads (encrypted reasoning, signatures, provider fields) with a read-only utf8_encodable() before using them. If one holds a lone surrogate, that turn is replayed portably without native state, the same path already used for incompatible or edited turns, and a warning is logged. Garph's session had no such payload; this is a guard for a provider that returns a lone \udXXX escape (e.g. a UTF-16 server cutting an emoji pair at a length cap, or a tool input object where the model wrote \ud800 in JSON).

Prompt caching and native replay

  • Clean text costs nothing. Encodable strings, emoji included, come back as the same objects; the whole list is returned unchanged when nothing needs escaping. Requests are byte-identical to before for every normal session. Cost: about 5 ms on a 3.8M-character context that is mostly non-ASCII, and less when it is ASCII.
  • The output is deterministic. The same poisoned context renders identically on every turn, so prefix caching still works once the surrogate is present. The surrogate only changes the request that was already failing.
  • The cache layout is unchanged. replay_message is never walked or copied. CacheBoundary passes through by identity, and a surrogate in the dynamic suffix leaves the static prefix byte-identical (test added in test_cached_renderer.py).
  • Native replay objects are never rewritten by the renderer. A replay turn whose content had to be escaped is handed the escaped content, and LLMResponse.render_message then falls back to the public assistant shape for that one turn (existing behavior when content differs). Turns that need no escaping keep native replay.
  • Native payloads are never modified. freeze() is unchanged and lossless. The projection check is read-only; ASCII blobs such as encrypted reasoning cost one isascii() call. A turn whose native state can't be encoded loses native replay (and its cache prefix) for that turn only; without the fix the request could not be sent at all.

An earlier version also escaped the provider output. I dropped that because the output contains native LLMResponse objects that must be resent verbatim; walking them broke test_finish_reason_propagation. Native payloads are checked in the request builders instead.

Not in this PR

  • Fail fast instead of retrying in CodeAct when generation raises a deterministic error such as UnicodeEncodeError. That would have shown the real cause right away instead of "LLM API error after 3 retries". It's a separate change to the retry policy.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of unusual text characters in rendered context and tool results, helping ensure output can be encoded and shared reliably.
    • When saved conversation data contains characters that cannot be safely encoded, the app now uses a compatible representation while preserving the original data.
    • Context limits and rendered output remain consistent when such characters are present.

A lone UTF-16 surrogate anywhere in the rendered context made every
request fail to serialize ("'utf-8' codec can't encode character
'\ud800' ... surrogates not allowed"). The agent could not recover:
the bad text lived in snapshot-backed state, so every retry and every
resume rebuilt the same unencodable request.

Seen in practice: an agent wrote "\ud800" (one backslash) in a todo
note, which Python turns into a real U+D800. Once that todo was active,
the todo_status block carried it into every prompt.

render_context() now escapes lone surrogates as the text "\udXXX" in
the neutral messages before provider formatting, which covers context
blocks, events and tool results, and the tracing journal that hashes
those messages. Encodable text is returned as the same objects, and
native replay turns are never rewritten, so the cache prefix, the
CacheBoundary marker and native replay are unaffected.

Walkthrough

The renderer escapes lone UTF-16 surrogates in system-block content, serialized message content, and neutral messages. Escaped content is used for truncation, statistics, and context-budget accounting. Native replay is disabled when its state is not UTF-8 encodable.

Escaping a lone surrogate turns 1 character into 6, but the budget and
the character stats were measured before escaping, so a block could fit
the budget and still render larger than it. Escape each block's content
before eviction and stats (context blocks up front, event blocks right
after serialization). The pass over the formatted messages stays for
tool calls, images and parts.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Escape surrogates in native replay fields before provider serialization.

_utf8_safe escapes only str, dict, list, tuple, and BaseModel values. Replay native payloads are stored as _FrozenObject, which subclasses Mapping, not dict. A lone surrogate in parts[*].native therefore passes through unchanged, even when the public text is clean.

In a compatible replay scope, response_parts.py and chat_parts.py copy that native payload into the outgoing request. httpx 0.28.1 encode_json then calls .encode("utf-8") on the serialized body, which can raise UnicodeEncodeError. The failure repeats on each later request that replays the turn.

Sanitizing the formatted output alone does not fix this. The native payload is still a _FrozenObject, and _utf8_safe does not descend into it. The fix needs both changes below. Escaped public content still selects the public fallback, because render_message compares content before the new pass runs.

Preserve dictionary-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments until JSON serialization.

The final _utf8_safe() pass rebuilds ToolCallInfo.arguments dictionaries with dict(items). A lone-surrogate key can collide with its literal escaped spelling, so one argument is lost before provider formatting.

Skip recursive sanitization only for dictionary-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments. Continue sanitizing string-valued arguments and the other ToolCallInfo fields. The only reachable provider formatter passes these arguments to JSON serialization, and the journal also uses json.dumps for dictionary arguments.

Native replay payloads (encrypted reasoning, signatures, provider
fields) are resent verbatim and never pass through rendered content, so
a lone surrogate in one would still break every later request. Escape
it in freeze(), which every NativeJSON value passes through on capture
and on snapshot restore: once per payload, never per request, and
encodable strings are kept as the same objects. The renderer still
never rewrites replay objects. The escaping moves to a shared
utf8_safe_text().

Leave dict-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments alone in the renderer. They
reach the request and the journal only through json.dumps, whose ASCII
escapes already make a surrogate encodable and keep the arguments exact;
escaping them first could merge a lone-surrogate key with its literal
escaped spelling.

@coderabbitai Both outside-diff findings from review 5683685121 are addressed in f91a7f8.

Native replay fields (Major). Fixed, but not with the suggested change. Escaping provider_formatter.format(messages) and walking Mapping would reach the native LLMResponse replay objects. Those must be resent unchanged. An earlier version of this PR walked the provider output and broke test_finish_reason_propagation. Instead, lone surrogates are escaped in freeze() (src/nooa/_immutable_json.py). Every NativeJSON value passes through it on capture and on snapshot restore, so each payload is escaped once and never per request. Encodable strings stay the same objects, so replay, caching and signatures are unchanged for valid data. The renderer still never rewrites replay objects. Tests: tests/test_immutable_json.py, including test_native_replay_payload_is_encodable_on_the_wire.

Dict-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments (Minor). Fixed as suggested. The renderer skips dict arguments, which reach the request and the journal only through json.dumps (ASCII escapes). New test test_dict_tool_arguments_are_left_to_json_encoding uses a lone-surrogate key next to its literal escaped spelling. Both keys survive, and the sent JSON decodes back to the original arguments.

Full unit suite: 9349 passed, 6 skipped.

Reject only sanitized-key collisions.

_utf8_safe currently preserves the handling of noncolliding metadata keys by sending their sanitized spelling. Rejecting every rewritten key would instead fail those requests. Detect duplicate sanitized keys before dict(items) so distinct keys that collapse to one key cannot lose metadata.

@furgalep Thanks for the explanation. I inspected the implementation and regression tests. Both fixes address the reported concerns.

  • Native replay fields: NativeJSON validates through freeze(), which escapes lone surrogates before rendering. Encodable strings retain object identity. The renderer skips replay_message and does not sanitize provider-formatted output. My suggested provider-output traversal was not appropriate for native replay objects.
  • Dict-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments: _utf8_safe() now skips these dictionaries. The regression test checks that the lone-surrogate key and its literal escaped spelling both survive JSON serialization.

The existing renderer guidance still applies to sanitization before budgeting and statistics. These exclusions clarify the final structured-field sanitization pass.

I did not run tests in this environment. The reported full-suite result is author-provided.

freeze() no longer escapes lone surrogates, so provider payloads are
stored and replayed exactly as received. Instead, project_turn() and
project_chat_turn() check native payloads with a read-only
utf8_encodable() and, if one cannot be encoded as UTF-8, replay that

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff point about key collisions in _utf8_safe() in the renderer: not changing this. A colliding pair needs one key with a lone surrogate and another key that is literally the same text with a backslash escape, inside a rendered message dict. Rendered messages have fixed keys (role, content, tool_calls, ...), and dict tool arguments are no longer walked. Raising ValueError would bring back the same stuck-session failure this PR fixes, whereas a last-write-wins merge in that theoretical case still sends a valid request.

🧩 Analysis chain

🏁 Script executed:

#!/bin/bash
ast-grep outline src/nooa/context_blocks/renderer.py --items all
rg -n -C 18 'def _utf8_safe|replay_message|ToolCallInfo|isinstance\(value, dict\)' src/nooa/context_blocks/renderer.py

Length of output: 5198

@furgalep Understood. I withdraw the key-collision finding. Rendered message dictionaries use fixed keys, and I confirmed that _utf8_safe() skips dictionary-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments.

The proposed ValueError is unnecessary for this rendering path and could reintroduce request failures. No change is needed for this finding.

Learning: Within repository "NVIDIA-NeMo/labs-OO-Agents", only for files matching one of ["src/nooa/context_blocks/renderer.py"]: When reviewing UTF-8 sanitization or content accounting in src/nooa/context_blocks/renderer.py, verify that system block content is escaped before context-budget eviction and serialized event content is escaped before character statistics are calculated. Retain the final sanitization pass over formatted neutral messages for remaining structured fields, but exclude replay_message and dictionary-valued ToolCallInfo.arguments. Native replay payload sanitization belongs in freeze() in src/nooa/_immutable_json.py at capture or snapshot restore, not in a traversal of provider-formatted output; native replay objects must not be rewritten per request. Leave dictionary-valued tool arguments to json.dumps so lone-surrogate keys and their literal escaped spellings remain distinct.
