NightSommelier/README.md

Hi, I'm Sommelier 👋

Linux enthusiast, self-hosting enjoyer and open-source builder.

I like building, deploying and maintaining infrastructure — from small home servers to containerized services, reverse proxies, backups, networking and automation.

A lot of my projects start with a simple question:

"Can I self-host this?"

🛠️ What I work with

Infrastructure & Linux

Infrastructure

  • Linux server administration
  • NixOS
  • Docker & Docker Compose
  • Proxmox / virtualization
  • Reverse proxies
  • SSL/TLS automation
  • Networking, VPNs and firewalling
  • Backup infrastructure with Restic
  • Monitoring and service troubleshooting

Development

Development

I mostly use development as a tool for solving infrastructure and self-hosting problems.

I have experience with:

  • Python
  • Bash / shell scripting
  • Git
  • APIs and service integrations
  • Dockerized application development

I'm also interested in doing more with:

  • Go
  • Rust
  • Kubernetes operators & tooling
  • Infrastructure automation
  • Developer tools

🏠 Self-hosting

Self-hosting is probably the area I enjoy the most.

I experiment with and maintain services involving:

  • Docker / Compose
  • Forgejo
  • Vaultwarden
  • Mail servers
  • Reverse proxies
  • XMPP / communication services
  • TURN / STUN
  • Object storage
  • Backup systems
  • Monitoring
  • VPN infrastructure
  • Small ARM servers
  • Home lab infrastructure

I enjoy understanding not only how to deploy something, but also how it works internally and how it can be improved.

🚀 Projects & experiments

TeleVault

A self-hosted, privacy-oriented platform for storing, indexing and managing Telegram media and files.

The idea is to combine Telegram-native workflows with a personal self-hosted archive.

Self-hosted communication

I'm interested in experimenting with privacy-focused communication infrastructure, including:

  • XMPP
  • TURN / STUN
  • encrypted messaging
  • self-hosted messaging backends
  • libsignal
  • alternative communication protocols

Infrastructure experiments

I regularly experiment with:

  • NixOS configurations
  • Docker infrastructure
  • reverse proxies
  • firewalling
  • backups
  • monitoring
  • Git hosting
  • CI/CD
  • ARM devices
  • virtualization

🔭 What I'd like to work on

I'm especially interested in open-source projects around:

Self-hosting
Linux
NixOS
Containers
Networking
Privacy
Messaging
Git infrastructure
Backup systems
Monitoring
Kubernetes
GitOps
Developer tooling

I'd also be interested in contributing to projects where infrastructure needs to be:

  • easier to deploy
  • easier to self-host
  • easier to maintain
  • more observable
  • more secure
  • better documented

🧪 Things I'm exploring

Currently Exploring

Currently spending more time exploring:

  • Rust
  • Go
  • Kubernetes
  • GitOps
  • Prometheus-compatible monitoring
  • secure infrastructure
  • privacy-focused software
  • distributed/self-hosted systems

💡 Things I enjoy

interests:
  - self-hosting
  - open-source
  - linux
  - infrastructure
  - privacy
  - networking
  - automation
  - experimenting with software

I enjoy taking existing open-source software, understanding how it works, deploying it in unusual environments and sometimes extending it with features I need.

🤝 Open to collaboration

I'm interested in collaborating on:

  • self-hosted applications
  • infrastructure tools
  • privacy-focused software
  • Linux / NixOS tooling
  • monitoring and automation
  • messaging infrastructure
  • small experimental open-source projects

If a project involves Linux, containers, networking or self-hosting, there's a good chance I'll find it interesting.

Build it. Host it. Break it. Understand it. Fix it. 🚀
