What's new in v1.4 — the old system disk that says what it is

Someone takes the system disk out of an old computer, puts it into an
enclosure, and plugs it in. Every space tool then tells them the same useless
truth: the space adds up. It does — every file on that drive is counted.
What none of them says is that those files are the leftovers of a Windows that
has not booted in years, sitting on a drive their owner now thinks of as
storage.

The Disk — where did the space go window now recognises that drive.

It shows a list of traces, not a verdict. Windows registry, the Windows
folder, user profiles, Windows.old, pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys — whatever
is actually there, named one by one. A drive may have been half-cleaned
already, and a list shows that by itself, where a single verdict would hide it.

Three limits it does not cross:

  • On your system drive it says nothing at all. The drive you booted from is
    supposed to look like this.
  • No action, no button, nothing to click. The window has never deleted
    anything and still does not.
  • No sizes. How much space those leftovers take is a question Windows
already answers with its own tools; adding our own number would invite the
one thing this window refuses to do.

Dual boot was the case that could have made it lie. A second working
Windows on another drive looks exactly like an abandoned one. So: if a profile
on that drive was used within the last 60 days and no strong trace — a registry
hive, a page file — is present, the window stays quiet. When the strong traces
are there it speaks, but it says out loud that this may be a second working
system, and leaves the reading to you.

It also tells you when the drive was last used, taken from the profile
itself, because a date does more to settle the question than any wording we
could choose.

Scanning, preview, cleaning and every safety guard — AGE / LOCKED / JUNCTION
and the blue "found it, suggesting nothing" rule — are untouched. Everything
added here lives in the two files the Disk window already uses; the main window
changes by one line, the version number.
