Show the rail network on a Rail tab in the staff panel - #110
Conversation
Admins and the owner see every VehicleFramework track on the live map's tiles, coloured by line, with stops, junctions, ends of track, and broken or damaged stretches listed for repair. The backend reads the track files from a read-only mount (RAIL_TRACKS_DIR), takes stops to be the settlements whose provinces a track crosses, and names each line after its end stops. WalkthroughThis change adds a protected backend endpoint for rail-network data and an admin page to inspect it. The backend reads and caches configured rail files. The frontend displays tracks, stops, lines and repair information on an interactive map. ChangesAdmin rail network

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Malformed rail data can prevent the Rail tab from loading for all staff, while unavailable map tiles leave selection and fit interactions ineffective. Fix the loading failures before merging.

- Around line 174-177: Restrict the `ValueError` handler around `validate_map`
to map validation alone, so only invalid map IDs return `400 bad_map`; call
`load_network` outside that try block so its parsing and NumPy errors are not
misreported as map errors.
Review comments at @backend/src/rail/network.py:
- Around line 138-148: In the segment-processing loop, handle conversion of
segment health with the same invalid-data tolerance as fromIndex: catch
TypeError and ValueError and skip that segment. Preserve the existing
broken-segment handling and mark valid segments damaged only when health is
below 1.0.
- Line 365: Update the updated_at computation to handle files that disappear
between the existence check and os.stat, skipping entries whose stat raises
OSError so the request does not fail. Alternatively, reuse the st_mtime_ns
values already recorded by _stamp in key.
- Around line 326-331: Handle conversion of the junction’s s value at the
junction-parsing site in the network-building function: catch TypeError and
ValueError and skip that junction, then pass the converted value to
stem.point_at. Keep the existing default of 0.0 when s is absent.
Review comments at @frontend/app/components/admin/RailMap.tsx:
- Around line 90-115: Update the focus-framing effect in RailMap so it can call
focusMapRect when the preview is ready and a target exists, even if manifest is
null. Keep the duplicate-target guard and existing focus behavior unchanged.

A malformed health or junction s now skips that one segment or junction. bad_map is only for the map id, updated_at comes from the stamps already taken, and a picked stop or break is framed even over the map preview. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

The added tests cover invalid values, timestamps, and focus over the preview. I did not run the tests. Keeping initial whole-network framing dependent on the tile manifest is consistent with the later size-change refit. ✏️ Learnings added

Adds a Rail tab to the staff panel (admins and the owner,
view_rail). It draws the server's VehicleFramework rail network on the live map's tiles, the same way the Movement tab draws paths. What it shows
How it works
GET /admin/rail?map=<id>(backend/src/rail/network.py) reads the track and junction JSON fromRAIL_TRACKS_DIR/<world>.province_id_runs.bin.gzandmap_markers.json. The run-length index is used so the full grid never sits in memory.useMapViewport.focusMapRecttakes an optionalframing(fill, maxUserScale). The Rail map uses it to frame the network and to zoom close to a stop or a break. Callers that don't pass it get the old framing.MovementMapexports its label measuring helpers so the Rail map's stop names use the same leader-line layout.Deploying
The backend needs VehicleFramework's
data/tracksfolder mounted read-only, in the host'sdocker-compose.override.yml, andRAIL_TRACKS_DIRset. Seebackend/src/rail/README.md. Until then the tab says the site isn't set up to read the network.Tests
