Stop the map shifting when a zoom settles - #128
Conversation
About 140 ms after each wheel tick, when the zoom settled, the map moved up to a pixel and a bit, each tile its own way. Three things changed between the live zoom and the rested one: - opaque tiles reached 2 px under their neighbours mid-zoom but 1 px at rest, so every tile's far side moved back a pixel; - tile edges were re-snapped to the pixels of the new zoom; - the live translate was not rounded to device pixels, the rested one was. Opaque tiles now overlap 2 px at rest and mid-zoom alike and keep their exact place; only see-through rasters still snap. The live zoom rounds its translate the way the rested view does, so the two coincide. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe map viewport aligns live zoom translations to device pixels. Tile rendering applies conditional pixel snapping and a 2-pixel overlap. CSS scales tile overlap using the live map scale. ChangesMap zoom and tile alignment

What
About 140 ms after each wheel tick (when the zoom settles) the whole map moved up and left by up to a pixel or so, each tile by its own amount. This is the "janky shift" in today's recording.
Why
Three things differed between the live zoom and the rested view:
Fix
.map-tilerule;data-scalingis gone). 1 px everywhere was not enough: a seam showed mid-zoom-out at dpr 1.seeThrough, the province modes) still snap, since they can't overlap.zoomcatches up. Mid-zoom tiles now land exactly where they will rest.Checked
Local
next devof this branch against live Main data, compared with tfminecraft.net, headless Chromium, 1200×520. A one-tick wheel zoom is screenshotted mid-gesture and after it settles, then the motion is measured per 96 px block by phase correlation:What remains is resampling noise from the re-raster at the new scale.
Seams (solid-black tiles on white, worst line darkness; #113's probe): mid-zoom is at or below main at dpr 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 2, and main's peaks of 0.139 (dpr 1.5) and 0.102 (dpr 2) drop to 0.042 and 0.063. At rest the values match main exactly; the high ones there are map edges on both.
All 1,975 frontend tests pass and
tscis clean. New tests: opaque tiles stay in place while see-through ones snap; a wheel zoom's live transform sits on whole device pixels and keeps its position when it settles (fails on main).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
