The Rail tab gets Map / Tube map buttons. Tube map redraws the network as an Underground-style diagram, kept in the URL as ?view=tube.

Layout (frontend/lib/admin/railSchematic.ts, runs in the browser on the existing /admin/rail data; the backend is unchanged)

  • Stops, junctions and track ends are the nodes. Each axis is stretched on its own, halfway between real distance and the nodes' order. Crowded stops get room, long empty runs shrink, and every stop keeps its compass order.
  • Nodes snap to a grid. Track between nodes becomes one or two runs at 0, 45 or 90 degrees with rounded bends, on the side nearer the real track. Larger real bends are kept as extra points.
  • A stop within 120 blocks of a track end sits on the end, so no stub runs past a terminus.

Look (RailTubeMap.tsx)

  • White sheet, thick lines in Underground colours (in the same order as the live map's red, green, blue…), ticks for stops, white rings for faction capitals, bars for ends.
  • Names in Underground blue, set in Hammersmith One (an open font modelled on Johnston), with long names on two lines.
  • A "Key to lines" box with coloured line bands, symbols and "Correct at ". It starts folded on phones.
  • Broken track shows as black dashes and damaged track as a white centre line, each with a ring. Picking a stop, line or break from the lists frames it on the diagram.

Checks: npm test (1,999 tests, 1 skipped), tsc, npm run build. Checked by eye in a local lab with Main's 7 October network on desktop and phone.

The Rail tab's new Map / Tube map buttons switch between the live map
and an Underground-style diagram (?view=tube). The diagram is laid out
in the browser from the same network data:

- stops, junctions and track ends are nodes; each axis is stretched
halfway between real distance and order, so crowded stops get room
and every stop keeps its compass order
- nodes snap to a grid, and track between them runs at 0, 45 or 90
degrees with rounded bends, on the side nearer the real track
- stops are ticks, faction capitals white rings, names in Underground
blue (Hammersmith One), lines in Underground colours, with a
"Key to lines" that folds away on phones
- broken and damaged track, and picking a stop, line or break from the
lists, work as on the live map

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a tube map view for the rail network, with coloured lines, stop labels, and indicators for track ends and damaged or broken sections.
    • Added controls to zoom, fit the network and focus on a selected stop. A collapsible key explains the map symbols and shows the network’s update time when available.
    • Added a selector to switch between the live map and tube map; the selected view is reflected in the URL.
    • Added a loading message while the rail overview is being prepared.

Walkthrough

The rail admin page now offers a URL-backed tube map view alongside the existing map. New schematic geometry and a pannable SVG component render rail lines, stops, track conditions, labels, and a map key.

Changes

Rail map

Layer / File(s) Summary
Schematic geometry and projection
frontend/lib/admin/railSchematic.ts, frontend/lib/admin/railSchematic.test.ts
The new schematic generator creates grid-aligned rail paths, stop positions, termini, and damaged or broken stretches. Projection and rounded-path helpers are also added, with tests for geometry and output.
Tube map rendering
frontend/app/components/admin/RailTubeMap.tsx, frontend/app/components/admin/RailTubeMap.test.tsx
The new pannable map renders tracks, stops, labels, and track conditions. It includes focus and zoom controls, line highlighting, and a collapsible key. Tests cover rendering, key behaviour, focus, and label wrapping.
Rail view selection and page integration
frontend/app/components/admin/RailOverview.tsx, frontend/app/components/admin/RailOverview.test.tsx, frontend/app/admin/rail/page.tsx
Map and Tube map controls select a view through the view query parameter. The page applies the Underground font variable and provides a Suspense fallback. Tests cover view selection, URL updates, and stop focus.

The view selector needs accessible control semantics, and selecting a long repair may leave part of it off-screen. Both issues are bounded and can be fixed without blocking the wider map workflow.

buttons instead of incomplete tab semantics: change the container to a labeled
group, remove tablist/tab roles, and use aria-pressed to reflect the active
view. Update the corresponding RailOverview.test.tsx query to target buttons by
aria-pressed.

complete geometry rather than a fixed-size box around p.points[0]. Calculate
bounds from all of p.points using the existing boundsOfPoints helper with the
required margin, and set focus with those bounds only when they are available.

The Map / Tube map buttons are a labelled group of toggle buttons
(aria-pressed) rather than tabs without tab panels. Picking a broken or
damaged stretch frames all of it, not a fixed box at its start.
