Re-check Discord membership with the bot instead of asking players to sign in again - #152
Conversation
… sign in again Linking needs server membership checked in the last 15 minutes, which only sign-in did, so a signed-in player was sent back through Discord to link. The backend now asks Discord with DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN when an unlinked player loads Account or starts a link. "I've joined, check again" reloads the account rather than signing in. A new sign-in is asked for only when Discord gives no clear answer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

📝 Summary
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Restore the Discord sign-in fallback and guard the bot token before merging. The default API endpoint uses HTTPS, but a remote HTTP override exposes the token; prolonged inconclusive checks can also accumulate retry state.

button when account.guild.member is false and add a DiscordSignInLink using
discordSignInUrl("/account") alongside it as a fallback. Preserve the existing
recheck behaviour and do not change the separate recheck branch.

Require a secure API base before sending the bot token.
If DISCORD_API_BASE is a remote http:// URL, this request sends Bot {config.token} without TLS. A network observer can capture and reuse the token. Reject remote HTTP bases before issuing the request; allow an exception only for an authenticated encrypted tunnel or an appropriately restricted local endpoint. (python-httpx.org)
Based on learnings: bearer/admin tokens in an Authorization header must use HTTPS or an authenticated encrypted tunnel, not plaintext HTTP.

…ep a sign-in fallback From Astra's review: one bot request runs at a time and waiting requests use its answer; 429 retry_after and outages pause every check; a not-member answer is reused for 15 s so reloads cannot flood Discord; old entries are pruned. /account says when Discord could not be asked (guild.can_recheck), and "I've joined, check again" then falls back to a Discord sign-in. The button says when Discord still doesn't show the player in the server. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…efuses the bot From Astra's second review: cached answers and pauses are read before the check lock, and waiting for it gives up after 4 s rather than queueing page loads. 401, 403 and 404 Unknown Guild pause every check for 10 minutes. The page uses the reload button only when the backend says it can re-check. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Linking needs TFMC server membership checked within the last 15 minutes. Only Discord sign-in did that check, so a player who was already signed in got sent back through Discord to link Minecraft.
backend/src/auth/guild_check.pyasks Discord withDISCORD_BOT_TOKEN(GET /guilds/{id}/members/{user}) when the check is stale. It runs when an unlinked player loads/account, links with a code, starts the Microsoft link, and in the Microsoft callback. The answer is stored on the session..env.examplenow documentsDISCORD_BOT_TOKEN, which www and Dev both already have.I checked by hand that Dev's bot token returns 200 for a member and 404 for an unknown user.
Tests: backend
src/authpasses with new tests for renewal, leaving, joining after sign-in, unclear answers, the retry wait, no checks for linked players, and the Discord response codes. Frontendnpm testpasses (170 files).Docs: TF-Minecraft/Docs#120.
