Summary

  • Adds an Infrastructure map mode coloured by each province's effective terrain (light red at 0.30, purple at 0.525, dark blue at 0.75 and above).
  • Hover reads Bog 0.40, infrastructure 60%, counts as 0.61, and falls back to the terrain value or the terrain name when the plugin has not exported the newer fields.
  • A stored chronicle day paints that day's effective_terrain only. Missing or invalid rows stay clear, and the live map is not shown under a past date.

Test plan

  • Backend pytest and frontend npm test (worker run: 1,425 passed, 1 skipped, plus the known Python 3.10 SQLite failure test_deletion_survives_more_than_999_present_factions; frontend 1,649 passed, 1 skipped; tsc --noEmit passed)
  • CI on this pull request
  • With an export that has no infrastructure fields, the mode draws nothing extra and does not error
  • With PR 11's export, a land province with infrastructure shows the hover line and the colour scale

Made with Cursor

Infrastructure changes what each province counts as, and a stored chronicle day has to paint that day's values rather than today's map.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an Infrastructure map mode with a colour-coded overlay showing infrastructure levels across land provinces.
    • Infrastructure maps are generated during trade-mode map updates and are available for historical days.
    • Province hover details can show terrain and infrastructure information.

Walkthrough

The change adds validated infrastructure data handling and raster generation to the backend. It adds infrastructure as a live and chronicle map mode in the frontend, including colour rendering and province hover details.

Changes

Infrastructure map mode

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export validated province fields
backend/src/api/data_routes.py, backend/src/api/test_infrastructure_data.py
Compiled province data now copies terrain and infrastructure measurements from province data only when they are finite numbers. Tests check accepted values and excluded metadata text.
Generate the infrastructure raster
backend/src/scripts/mapgen/infrastructuregen.py, backend/src/scripts/mapgen/mapmodes/infrastructure_mapmode.py, backend/src/scripts/mapgen/test_infrastructuregen.py
The generator colours eligible provinces from effective terrain, paints the map and saves a PNG. The command-line script and colour tests are included.
Add generation to trade-mode regeneration
backend/src/scripts/util/regeneration.py, backend/src/scripts/util/mode_worker.py, backend/src/scripts/util/test_regeneration_parallel.py
Serial and parallel trade-mode regeneration create the infrastructure map. The parallel worker passes the loaded geometry cache. Tests check both call paths.
Render infrastructure for stored days
frontend/app/lib/map/chronicleInfrastructure.ts, frontend/app/lib/map/chronicleDayModes.ts, frontend/app/lib/map/chronicleDayModes.test.ts, frontend/app/lib/map/dataSource.test.ts, frontend/app/components/MapViewer.tsx, frontend/app/components/chronicle/ChronicleProvincePaintLayer.tsx, frontend/app/components/map/MapCanvas.tsx
Chronicle mode uses captured province data and an infrastructure colour LUT. Tests cover routing and colour filtering. Component documentation includes infrastructure raster handling.
Expose infrastructure as a live map mode
frontend/app/components/map/types.ts, frontend/app/components/map/MapToolbar.tsx, frontend/app/components/map/MapToolbar.test.ts, frontend/app/hooks/regionPick.ts, frontend/app/hooks/useMapModeData.ts
The map type and toolbar include infrastructure. Region fetching and picking use the existing map-mode handling paths.
Show infrastructure details on province hover
frontend/app/hooks/useProvinceHover.ts, frontend/app/hooks/useProvinceHover.test.ts
Stored province data retains valid terrain and infrastructure fields. Hover text formats available details. Tooltip rendering clears and stops for water and sea provinces.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 9bb7a

The change adds live and historical effective-terrain maps and hover details. Historical views use each day’s captured data, while missing or invalid values remain clear. No material merge-blocking risk is established; proceed with normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9bb7a

The new layer uses existing map-access checks and rejects malformed measurements before display. No authorization bypass was identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns production data-writer authority and interrupted or concurrent raster publication, rather than a demonstrated security defect.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected request paths scope measurement and raster exposure to the selected map. Public maps remain publicly readable; non-public maps require the existing staff-session and map-permission checks. These paths do not establish broader service, environment, or data-writer exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Plugin-derived measurements are treated as data rather than executable content. Backend compilation rejects booleans, nonnumeric values, and non-finite numbers; frontend hover and historical painting apply independent numeric validity checks. Authorization of the external plugin writer was not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — An interrupted direct PNG save may leave this display artifact incomplete until successful regeneration. This extends a pre-existing publication limitation to the new layer; the available evidence does not demonstrate an authorization failure or cross-map disclosure. Actual reader overlap and recovery behavior remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — A shared temporary-file-and-atomic-replace publication mechanism could preserve the previous complete raster during failed saves. This is a resilience improvement to the existing writer pattern, not a verified PR-introduced security finding.

province so the four validated fields are excluded from m before merging; add
them back only when their metadata values pass _finite_number, preventing
invalid strings from entering the compiled JSON.

Review comments at @backend/src/scripts/util/regeneration.py:
- Around line 178-179: Ensure the parallel trade worker in full regeneration
calls create_infrastructure_map for infrastructure_map using the shared cache,
so it generates the map rather than leaving it stale or absent. Add the call
within the worker’s generation flow alongside the other map-generation steps.

to clear cursorTooltip before returning, while preserving the existing handling
for missing data.

A text value in provinces.txt was leaking into the hover, a parallel trade regen never drew the layer, and hovering water left the previous tooltip up.

#61 added the Infrastructure raster mode through the old MapToolbar,
which this branch replaced. It now sits in the mode bar after
Prosperity with a bridge icon, gets its tiles warmed after a regen, and
loads its province figures on entry like the other raster modes. Main's
fix for hovering water carries over: water clears the tooltip as sea
does. #63 (factions guide) merged cleanly.

Also fixes the mapdata route when called directly (tests): the new
`scale` parameter is then still its Query default.
