Staff can now see where a player went, on the live map, from CoreProtect's once-a-minute position pings.

What it adds

  • Player profile, Movement panel. The player's path over the last hour on the live map's base tiles (1 block = 1 map pixel). Presets 15 min / 1 h / 6 h / 24 h / 7 days, an "ending" time or Now (refreshes every 60 s), full screen.
    • Path fades violet (old) to orange (new) over a dark edge. Login and logout dots; per-ping dots with times on hover.
    • Dashed lines mark moves too fast to have walked (perhaps a teleport).
    • A slider and Play place the player at any moment. Between pings the position is labelled a straight-line guess.
    • Summary: time seen, distance, time in the Nether or the End.
  • /admin/movement (new "Movement" tab). Everyone over up to 24 hours on one map, with a player list showing where each player was at the slider's moment. Hovering a name highlights their trail.
  • API. GET /admin/players/{uuid}/movement (window ≤ 7 days) and GET /admin/movement (≤ 24 hours), both since/until in Unix seconds, default the last hour. Points come from co_session logins, logouts and pings, plus the row just before the window so a path starts where the player already was.

Access and audit

New capability view_player_movement for admins and the owner. Every successful read is recorded as player.movement.view before it is returned: who, which player (or everyone), the window and the row count, never positions. The read is refused (503) if that record can't be written, as for chat. Mods don't see the panel.

Safety on the live database

  • Rows are read newest first in keyset batches of 5,000. Each batch is its own autocommit statement, so no statement holds CoreProtect's read lock for long.
  • A window holding more than the cap (12,000 rows for one player, 50,000 for everyone) keeps the newest rows. complete_from tells the page where complete data starts.
  • Measured inside Main's backend container through the real read-only mount, 60 requests:
    • everyone over 24 h (26,900 rows): 33 ms per request; longest statement 58 ms, usually under 8 ms;
    • one player over 7 days: 4 ms;
    • no errors.
  • The README explains why ~/work/amp-readonly must not be used for such timings (FUSE, no lock passthrough).
  • New setting COREPROTECT_MAP_WORLD (default TFMC_Map, the level-name on both servers) picks which world is drawn.

Review

Astra (gpt-6-astra) reviewed this in three rounds:

  1. Design. Admin-only access with an audit record, the batching, the truncation boundary, the lead-in, timestamp bounds and UUID normalisation all came from this round.
  2. Code. Three bugs: lead-in time counted in totals, everyone's lead-in chosen per CoreProtect id rather than per player, and the slider escaping the window on refresh.
  3. Confirmation. All fixed, no blocking findings.

Tests

  • Backend: src/coreprotect and src/auth, 194 passed. In the full suite, test_deletion_survives_more_than_999_present_factions also fails on main.
  • Frontend: tsc; all 1,846 tests passed before the last fixes, and the admin and movement tests (46) pass after them.
  • Checked in a browser against real Main data served through a local proxy.

Deploy notes

Optionally set COREPROTECT_MAP_WORLD on each site; the default fits both servers. No migrations.

Redesign after first use (owner feedback, designed with Astra)

The panel on the profile is replaced by a dedicated page, /admin/players/<uuid>/movement, opened from a Movement card on the profile.

Sessions and time ranges

  • Sessions tab (the default). Each session row says only what the record shows: Logged out, Probably online · last observed, Last observed · logout not recorded, End unknown.
    • Backend: /sessions rows carry an opaque id and last_observed.
    • New GET /admin/players/{uuid}/sessions/{id}/movement returns one session's rows, from login to logout (or to the next login, or to now). Unknown ids give 404 session_gone. Reads are audited.
  • Time range tab. From and To are always filled in and applied with Apply.
    • Quick ranges fill both; "Keep up to date" (off by default) moves the range with the clock.
    • The span and time zone are spelled out.
    • Local times the clocks skip or repeat are refused.

Map

  • Start and end labels (Logged in / Logged out, or First / Last observation shown) and direction arrows.
  • The trail after the inspected moment is dimmed.
  • Recorded positions are solid, estimates hollow.
  • A legend, a scale bar and an incident pin.
  • Buttons for Fit trail and Go to the inspected position.
  • Zooms to about 12 screen pixels per block, through a new useMapViewport option maxDisplayScale used only by these maps.

Timeline and inspected moment

  • The timeline shows observed bands, unobserved gaps, and the span before any observations.
  • Pick a moment by typing it, dragging the timeline, clicking a dot, or stepping between observations.
  • Wording for each kind of moment: recorded, estimated, unobserved transition, last seen, not observed.
  • Recorded positions offer a teleport command to copy.

Links and the everyone page

  • The whole view lives in the URL, updated through the native history API.
  • Copy link freezes a range that follows the clock.
  • The everyone page has the same controls, a searchable player list with selection and Only selected, and a timeline row per player. Player links carry the range, moment and pin.

Removed: Play and the distance figure.

Review: Astra reviewed the design over two rounds and the code over two more; every finding is fixed. The layout was also checked in WebKit, after a Safari overlap report.

Players list

  • The search box spans its own row, with a clear button.
  • New sort by character name. Characters also show under the name on narrow screens.

Admins and the owner can read where a player went, or where everyone went,
in a window of up to 7 days (one player) or 24 hours (everyone), from
co_session's logins, logouts and once-a-minute pings. Reads are batched
newest first so no statement holds CoreProtect's read lock for long; a
window too big for one answer says from when it is complete. Every view is
audited as player.movement.view, without positions.

A Movement panel on each player's profile draws their path on the live
map's tiles over a chosen window, with a slider (and play) for where they
were at a moment, and /admin/movement shows everyone at once.

At the newest moment the latest ping can be up to a minute old, so the map
showed everyone as not seen. A player now stays at their last sighting for
two ping intervals unless they logged out. Paths fade violet to orange, hues
the terrain does not use, over a dark edge.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d-in per player

The row before the window now only places the player as it opens: paths,
framing and totals are clipped to the window. A refresh that moves the window
past the slider's moment clamps it. Everyone's row before the window is
chosen per player across all their CoreProtect ids, so a logout under one id
is not undone by an older ping under another.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1c837

Movement history is privacy-sensitive, but the inspected paths enforce administrator access, record an audit before returning retrieved data, and refuse delivery when auditing fails. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Production deployment assumptions and external nickname synchronization behavior remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A compromised administrator or owner account gains access to movement histories for arbitrary players and everyone in the configured CoreProtect source. Window and row caps bound individual responses, not cumulative disclosure through repeated authorized reads. The inspected flow does not confer database write authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — All three movement routes authenticate the caller and require view_player_movement, whose minimum role is administrator. Session movement additionally resolves the exact login row against the requested player's CoreProtect identities. Sensitive successful responses are audited with actor, subject, interval, and row count, excluding positions. Server responses and frontend fetches use no-store.
  • observed — The nickname update route retains the shared staff-key boundary that already authorized username updates in the base. Its new authority is metadata replacement on existing linked identities, not creation or relinking. The external producer and its intended freshness policy are not established; broader nickname-writer authority alone does not establish an introduced authorization vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Audit insertion is explicitly committed before movement delivery; audit failure produces 503 instead of returning retrieved positions. CoreProtect failures produce empty movement collections with unavailable status. Reader cleanup closes the connection and releases its gate on failure or interruption. Repeated successful reads produce separate audit records rather than reusing an earlier authorization or audit receipt.
  • Autopilot · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts

The site map stops at 16 times its fitted scale, about one screen pixel per
block in the staff panel. useMapViewport takes an optional maxDisplayScale
that raises the cap for one viewport; the movement maps allow 12 screen
pixels per block. The site map is unchanged.

/sessions rows carry an opaque id (their login row) and the last observed
point. GET /admin/players/{uuid}/sessions/{id}/movement returns that session
and its rows from login through logout, or up to the next login, or now
while it is open; an id that is not the player's, or no longer found, is
404 session_gone. Movement answers carry as_of.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ected moment

Agreed with Astra over two design rounds. Each player gets a full movement
page, linked from a card on their profile:

- Sessions (default) or a time range. Session rows say only what the
record shows: Logged out, Probably online · last observed, Last observed ·
  logout not recorded, End unknown.
- From and To are always filled in and applied together, with quick
ranges, an explicit Keep up to date, and the span and time zone spelled out.
Local times the clocks skip or repeat are refused.
- The map labels where the trail starts and ends (Logged in / First
observation shown, Logged out / Last observation shown), marks direction,
dims what comes after the inspected moment, shows recorded positions solid
and estimates hollow, and has a legend, a scale bar, an incident pin and
buttons to fit the trail or go to the inspected position. It frames a new
  selection once, not on refresh.
- A timeline shows observed bands, unobserved gaps and the span before any
observations; the inspected moment can be typed, dragged, clicked on a dot,
or stepped between observations, with wording for recorded, estimated,
unobserved, last-seen and not-observed moments, and a teleport command to
  copy for recorded ones.
- The whole view lives in the URL, and Copy link freezes a live range.

The everyone page gets the same controls, a searchable player list with
selection, positions as of the inspected moment, and links that carry the
range, moment and pin to a player's page. The distance figure is gone: the
pings cannot support it.

…long session lists

Ticking a player or dragging the timeline went through the Next.js router,
a navigation per change that lagged by up to half a second. The query now
changes through the native history API, which Next.js keeps useSearchParams
in step with. Long session lists scroll on their own, and the everyone
timeline gives each of up to eight drawn players their own row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
From Astra's review of the rebuilt pages:
- A new selection is framed only once its own answer is in, not against the
  previous trail.
- Following an open session stops on a new selection or a recorded end;
following a range no longer overwrites From and To while they are edited.
- Previous/next observation steps only between recorded rows; the point
made up where a clipped path meets the range's edge is never a dot or an
  observation label.
- Only selected is kept in the URL, so copied links show the same players.
- The timeline shows keyboard focus and reads out its moment; controls and
  checkboxes keep 44 px targets.
- Local times that repeat when the clocks change are caught for any size of
change, and day ticks stay on local midnight across one.
- On phones the scale bar sits clear of the legend and labels near the
right edge turn to the left.

Safari draws a date and time box at its own width, past a narrow box, so
Inspect time ran under Previous observation. Date boxes drop the native
appearance so they keep to the width given, and the inspect box has its own
row with the step buttons together below it. Checked in WebKit at phone,
tablet and desktop widths.

…w of its own

The search box shared a row with the sort buttons and was squeezed to a few
letters on narrower screens. It now spans the page with a search icon and a
clear button, and the sort buttons sit below it under "Sort by". Players
can be sorted by character name (their first alphabetically; those without
one last), and on narrow screens their characters show under their name.

Start the session span at complete_from when rows were capped.

The comment on lines 485–486 says the span starts "from where the kept rows are complete" if the session held too many rows. The code always sets since to session["start"]["time"]. The body["complete_from"] value is not used here. As a result, the audit record and the response since cover the full login span, but the oldest rows are missing. The frontend uses complete_from to draw a hatched region, so the display still works. The comment and the audited since do not match the code. Correct the code or the comment.

Links made before handles were checked stored the server nickname in
discord_username ("Justin"), which the staff panel showed as a handle. The
nickname now has its own column, discord_nickname:
- On upgrade, a stored name that is not shaped like a handle moves there and
the handle is cleared, so the bot's fill or the player's next sign-in
  stores the real one.
- Website sign-in stores the nickname from the member record Discord
already returns, and the bot may send discord_nickname with usernames.
- The profile shows Discord (the handle) and Server nickname; the players
list shows both, searches both, and sorts by handle, else nickname.

- Around line 169-171: Update the discord_nickname validation path that uses
_NICKNAME_MAX so invalid non-null values are rejected before any update rather
than converted to None; reserve None for an explicit clear. Align the length
limit in the skins route with _NICKNAME_MAX.

RPCharacters now re-checks every web create before applying it
(RPCharacters #94). Run the same checks on submit, so the wizard reports
a problem instead of the plugin rejecting the create later:

- names: a letter, then letters, spaces, apostrophes, hyphens and full
  stops (no digits or underscores)
- age within the race's age_max
- trait stages that would open for this character (stage dependency and
account age), per-stage counts, points and the permanent-only filter
- traits without a web stage (attribute ranks, ambition, expedition) are
  refused
- mutual exclusions, trait requirements and account-age playtime
- repeated clues

Pending creates now hold a slot, and the create page says when every
slot is taken. In the wizard a trait whose requirement is missing cannot
be picked, and picks are dropped when their stage closes or their
requirement goes, so removing the personality that unlocks an evil
archetype also removes the archetype.
