Summary

Chest lockpicking becomes two skill puzzles instead of one random roll. Doors and displays keep the timing bar.

  1. A lock minigame, chosen at random per attempt (dial-chance, 50%):
    • Pin grid (modelled on the NoPixel thermite game): memorise the lit pins in a dialog, then set them from memory before the timer runs out.
    • Lockpick ring (modelled on the NoPixel lockpicks game): a ring floats in front of the chest and a white needle sweeps round it. Press the shown movement key while the needle is in the green zone, once per tumbler. One slip and the pins give.
  2. Seized-pin probe (minesweeper-style): the existing probe menu, but a probe breaks the lockpick only by hitting a hidden seized pin, and every safe probe tells you how many seized pins surround it. This replaces the random break roll that rose with each probe.

Everything is server-side and works on vanilla clients.

1a. Pin grid (dialog)

The grid uses a Paper dialog, the same menu style as the who's-online and playtime screens. Cells are drawn with block textures through sprite components (unlit lamp, lit lamp, sea lantern, redstone block, gold block). grid.sprites: false falls back to coloured squares.

With grid.pack: true the grid is drawn as a lit board from the thievery:lockpick font in the server pack (TF-Minecraft/ServerAssets#31). Neighbouring tiles join into one dark board with a rim. Pins are cyan while memorising and green once set, a miss shows a red cross and a missed pin is outlined in amber. Each button's outline still shows, so the cursor lights the tile under it. Pips count pins set and slips, and Give up becomes a red plate that closes the bottom of the board. It is off by default: turn it on once the server's pack has been rebuilt with the font.

The dialog's blur hides the boss bar, so the pin grid has no boss bar and draws its countdown in the dialog. In every mode the title counts down the seconds left ("Memorise the pins · 3"), turning red for the last three. With the pack, a strip along the board's top edge drains gold while memorising, then green and finally red while setting pins. The dialog redraws each second for the title, or every 4 ticks for the strip.

  1. Steady your hands (1s): the grid appears, all dark.
  2. Memorise the pins: the pins light up row by row, each row with a rising hi-hat, then hold for 4s.
  3. Set the pins (6s, plus 0.05s per Dexterity level): the pins go dark. Each correct pin plays the next note of a pentatonic scale and a miss plays a bass note. The title's countdown turns red and ticks for the last 3 seconds.
  4. The lock gives way: setting every pin opens the probe menu.
  5. The pins slip: three wrong cells or the timer running out shows the missed pins in gold.

Escape cannot close the dialog. The only way out is Give up, which counts as a failed attempt. Clicks count from whichever frame they came from, because a quick thief clicks again before the redrawn dialog arrives. Clicks from an old dialog never reach a cancelled game or the thief's next game.

1b. Lockpick ring

  • The ring is built from text and item display entities that only the thief can see. It floats up to 2.4 blocks in front of the thief, and shrinks as it comes closer so it always looks the same size. Placement traces a grid of sight lines across the ring's whole outline and keeps every part of it short of the block behind, so looking down at a chest or up at a raised one never sinks the ring into it.
  • The pointer is a white needle with a dark edge across the dots. It is drawn as the backdrop of a text display, so its edges stay straight and sharp at any angle, and it glides with client-side interpolation, so it moves smoothly at the client frame rate rather than the 20 tps server rate.
  • The key in the middle is a keybind component, so every player sees their own binding: W/A/S/D on QWERTY, Z/Q/S/D on AZERTY. Inputs come from PlayerInputEvent, so the hotbar never flickers.
  • Each tumbler is one pass. The zone always starts after the first third. Each set tumbler narrows the next zone by 15% and reverses the sweep direction. A pass takes 1.44 to 2.08s, plus 0.008s per Dexterity level.
  • Presses are judged against where the pick was when the thief saw it: up to 6 ticks back, from their ping.
  • A wrong key, pressing two keys at once, pressing too early or too late, or letting the needle go round all count as slips, and one slip fails the ring (dial.mistakes-to-fail). Pins rise gold as they set, slips show as red crosses, and each has its own sound and a green or red puff of dust just past the needle's tip, clear of the zone and sized with the ring. Sneak gives up.

Holding the thief still during the ring

  • Walk speed and jump go to zero, so the field of view does not change. Flight is paused.
  • The original values are kept in the player's data, so a crash or a quit mid-pick restores them on the next join.
  • Only the horizontal position is held, so knockback, water and nudges cannot drift the thief, but someone who starts mid-jump still lands. The ring waits up to a second for them to land, then floats before their eyes where they come to rest.
  • Hotbar scrolling, dropping, swapping hands, inventory clicks and mounting are cancelled, so the solved lock always has a pick to open it.

Failure and interruptions (both games)

  • Failing, giving up or logging out mid-pick puts that chest on the lockpicking fail cooldown (fail-cooldown-ms, 60s). The lockpick may also snap (fail-break-chance, 50%; one from a stack). A failed minigame does not record chest access, ping nearby containers or start the multi-day access cooldown.
  • Taking damage fails the attempt ("You flinch and lose the pins.").
  • Being teleported more than a block away or to another world ends the attempt without a penalty. So does the chest being broken.
  • The ring will not start while riding or gliding.
  • A thief can work only one lock at a time.

2. Seized-pin probe

  • Seized pins are placed on the first probe. The first slot and, when there is room, its eight neighbours stay clear.
  • Each safe probe shows how many of the surrounding slots hide a seized pin. An empty slot becomes a pane whose colour and stack size give the count (white 0, light blue 1, lime 2, yellow 3, orange 4, magenta 5 or more). An item slot gets the count as its first lore line.
  • Right-click marks a hidden slot as a suspected seized pin (red). A marked slot cannot be probed until it is unmarked. The title's Seized: N replaces Break: X% and counts the pins not yet marked.
  • Probing a seized pin snaps one lockpick, reveals every seized pin (iron bars) and stops probing. Revealed items can still be taken, as before. Items under seized pins are out of reach for that attempt.
  • Pin count = slots × seized-density (0.3) × the old break chance (1 - success chance, from Dexterity and pick strength) × the lock type's break-chance-multiplier, plus seized-per-grid-mistake (1) for each mistake in the minigame. The count is capped at one less than the slots.

Risk gain per probe, clue drops and the budget are unchanged.

Review fixes

An Opus and a GPT-6-Astra review of this PR found these; all are fixed with tests:

  • Both halves of a double chest are one lock: one fail cooldown, one thief at a time.
  • The access cooldown is rechecked when the minigame is solved.
  • A failed pick only breaks the lockpick it started with; the grid locks the hand too.
  • The ring waits for a laggy press before calling a pass too late.
  • /thievery reload ends running picks without a penalty.
  • Door picking and grave looting ignore a thief who is working a lock.
  • The grid makes its click actions once per game rather than per frame.
  • Only a plain left click probes a slot; any right-click marks it.
  • The per-tick chest check no longer snapshots the chest.

Staff command

/thievery testpick [grid|dial] (thievery.admin) starts a minigame on the container you are looking at, while holding a lockpick. A named mode runs even when the minigame is off; with no mode it rolls one as a real attempt would. Penalties and the probe menu work as in a real attempt.

Config

Configs without these keys get the defaults. A leftover break-chance-ramp-per-slot is ignored.

Implementation

  • door/LockMinigameManager: picks the mode, runs the game task, applies penalties and owns the interruption and hands-on-lock listeners.
  • door/LockMinigame: the shared lifecycle (outcome, boss bar for the ring, solve and fail).
  • door/PinGridGame, door/PinGrid, door/GridScreen, door/GridDialogs: the grid game, the puzzle, one rendered frame and the dialog builder.
  • door/RingDialGame, door/Sweep, door/RingLayout, door/RingView: the ring game, one pass and its judging, the ring geometry and the display entities.
  • door/LockFreeze: freezing and restoring movement, with crash recovery.
  • door/SeizedPins and steal/SeizedPinPanes: pin placement, neighbour counts and panes. ChestLockpickSession holds the seized count, pins and marks. The break-chance ramp methods are removed.
  • ContainerManager.lockpickChest runs every existing check, then starts the minigame. openLockpickSession checks the chest and the held lockpick again, then sizes the seized pins from the minigame mistakes.

Testing

  • mvn -o -B verify: 794 tests pass, and JaCoCo stays at 100% for classes, lines, branches, methods and instructions.
  • PinGridGameTest: scan, memorise and recall phases, the scale, solving, failing, the timer, give up, clicks from older frames, and old dialogs after a cancel or a new game.
  • RingDialGameTest: hits, early and late presses, one slip failing by default, wrong keys, two keys at once, held keys, lag compensation, passes running out, alternating direction, zone shrinking, sneak to give up and cleanup.
  • SweepTest, RingLayoutTest, RingViewTest: zone rolls and judging in both directions, ring geometry, and placement that keeps every point of the ring out of a floor or ceiling at pitches from 10° to 70° (this test fails on the old crosshair-only rule), and the entities (per-viewer visibility, interpolation, colours, pins and slips, and a needle that lies along the radius centred on the ring at every angle).
  • LockFreezeTest: freezing, flight, idempotent freezes and release.
  • LockMinigameManagerTest: mode choice, cooldowns, vehicles and gliding, damage, teleports, quitting, crash recovery on join, holding still, falling, and blocked hotbar, drop, swap, inventory and mount events.
  • GridDialogsTest: dialog structure, the sprite workaround and the fallback squares.
  • Seized-pin, probe and ContainerManager tests as before, plus one lock at a time.
  • Played both games on a local Paper 1.21.10 server with a scripted vanilla Fabric client: a full grid solve into the probe menu, and a ring run with a deliberate wrong key, four tumblers set and the probe menu opening. An earlier build of the grid and the ring was played on TFMCDev01.

Docs: TF-Minecraft/Docs#81.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Right-clicking a chest with a lockpick now opens a pin grid first. The lit
pins show for a few seconds, then hide, and the thief must set every pin from
memory before the recall timer runs out. Solving it opens the existing hidden
probe menu unchanged.

Failing, timing out or closing the grid applies the lockpicking fail cooldown
to that chest and may snap the lockpick. Dexterity adds recall time. Every
setting lives under lockpicking.chest.minigame, and enabled: false restores
the old behaviour.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Chest lockpicking now includes two configurable challenges: a pin-memory puzzle or a timed lockpick-ring challenge.
    • Chest probing now involves identifying and marking seized pins; mistakes can increase the number of seized pins, and probing one breaks the lockpick.
    • Administrators can use /thievery testpick [grid|dial] to test either challenge.
    • Challenge settings can be adjusted in the plugin configuration.

Walkthrough

Chest lockpicking now starts with a configurable pin-grid or ring-dial minigame. A successful game opens a probe session that tracks seized pins, supports marking slots, and displays nearby-pin counts. Configuration, admin testing commands, and tests are updated for these changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 26db3

Chest lockpicking now runs a pin-grid or ring minigame before the probe menu opens. One gap remains: a thief can teleport away with a command mid-pick to avoid the failure cooldown and the chance of breaking a lockpick, then retry immediately. This is a narrow gameplay loophole, not a stability or data problem, so the change can merge once the owner is aware or the small fix is applied.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 26db3

The added puzzle phase can let guild members start nearby locks before shared cooldowns are recorded, then complete them after the cooldown should apply. The staff-only command remains permission-gated, and centralized cleanup limits movement-related risk.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The deferred transition separates shared cooldown validation from access recording without a reservation or commit-time recheck. When proximity cooldowns are enabled, guild members can start minigames on distinct nearby containers before either completes. The first completion records access against both targets, but the second callback still creates a probe session despite the newly applicable guild cooldown. Base initialization recorded access before another attempt could start.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified exposure concerns container inventories and shared theft cooldowns on the game server. Its scope is multiple containers within the configured proximity radius, scaled by coordinated eligible guild members. It does not require administrative permission, but ordinary trait, clue, lockpick and initial target-eligibility requirements still apply.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Two guild members can begin puzzles on different nearby containers while both access maps are clear. After the first member succeeds, proximity recording makes the second target subject to guild cooldown. The second member's existing completion callback does not repeat that check and still constructs a probe session. Exact-block exclusion and stale-game identity checks do not cover this shared cooldown scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ordinary chest interaction checks training, clues, existing access, owner-online eligibility, held lockpick, conflicts and cooldown before delegation. The indexed testpick command separately enforces thievery.admin. Its deliberate bypass does not demonstrate unprivileged command reachability, and existing container access already grants staff a bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Scheduled ticks reject replaced-game identities. Failure and cancellation do not invoke the success callback, while logout and qualifying teleport interruptions converge on task, boss-bar and game cleanup. Ring cleanup releases saved movement state; restoring flight remains conditional on current flight permission.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make shared cooldown eligibility and successful session creation one guarded transition: either reserve the applicable guild/proximity scope during puzzle initiation or revalidate it immediately before recording access and opening the probe. Any reservation should be identity-bound and released idempotently on failure, cancellation, interruption and recovery. Keep the intentional administrative bypass explicit.

The probe menu after the pin grid broke the lockpick on a random roll that
rose with every probe. It is now a deduction puzzle. Seized pins hide among the
chest's slots, the first probe and its neighbours are always clear, and each
safe probe shows how many seized pins surround it: empty slots by pane colour
and stack size, items in their first lore line. Right-click marks a suspected
pin so it cannot be probed by mistake. Probing a seized pin snaps the lockpick
and reveals them all; revealed items can still be taken.

The pin count is the old break chance spread over the chest's slots
(seized-density), scaled by lock type, plus one per wrong cell on the pin
grid (seized-per-grid-mistake). The title shows the pins not yet marked.
break-chance-ramp-per-slot is gone.

Grid mistakes could push the seized count past the slots left after the
always-clear first probe, so the title promised pins that were never placed.

Half of chest lockpick attempts now open a lockpick dial instead of the pin
grid, modelled on the NoPixel lockpick minigame. A pick sweeps once round a
twelve-slot ring; the thief hovers the menu and presses the number key shown
in the middle while the pick is in the green zone. Each hit sets a tumbler,
and four open the probe menu. Too soon, too late, the wrong key, or a full
sweep without a press is a slip: slips count towards mistakes-to-fail and
seize extra pins, just like wrong grid cells. Presses are judged where the
pick was when the thief saw it, from their ping. Dexterity slows the pick.

The pin grid and the dial share a LockMinigame base and LockMinigameManager,
which replaces PinGridManager and keeps the menu, boss bar, end display,
cooldown and penalties in one place.

Staff can look at any container while holding a lockpick and run
/thievery testpick [grid|dial]. It skips the trait, clue, ownership and access
checks, forces the named minigame (or the usual random choice), and opens the
real probe menu once it is solved. A forced mode runs even with the minigame
disabled.

ContainerManager checks the main-hand item before starting the minigame, but breakLockpick later removes whatever occupies the main hand. The minigame does not prevent held-slot changes or store the starting lockpick. A slot change can therefore remove another item or leave the original lockpick intact. Store the starting lockpick or slot, and remove only that validated item.

A real client showed two problems. Key 1 had no number, because a stack of
one shows no count; the dial now shows four key caps in hotbar order with the
one to press in gold. A cancelled number-key or offhand swap left the key item
in the client's hotbar and a gap in the menu until the next sync, so the
menu now resends the inventory on the next tick after those clicks.

…ring

The pin grid now runs in a Paper dialog with block-texture cells, a row by
row scan, a rising chime for each pin and a give-up button. Clicks count from
any frame of the running game, since a quick thief clicks again before the
redrawn frame arrives, but never reach a cancelled or replaced game.

The lockpick dial becomes a ring of display entities floating in front of the
chest. The pick glides with client interpolation, keys are the player's own
movement bindings (so AZERTY shows Z/Q/S/D), sneak gives up, directions
alternate and zones shrink per tumbler, and presses are judged against the
pick the thief saw, allowing for ping.

The thief is held still while working the ring: walk speed and jump are
zeroed and flight is paused, with the originals kept in the player's data so
a crash or quit restores them on the next join. Hotbar, drop, swap and
inventory clicks are blocked during the ring, damage makes the thief flinch
and fail, and a teleport away or into a vehicle ends the attempt.

Holding the whole position kept a thief who started mid-jump hovering until
the server kicked them for flying, so only the horizontal position is held
now. Right-clicking a horse or boat during the ring is cancelled, since the
ride would carry the thief away from the lock.

A thief could type /spawn or /home, or throw an off-hand ender pearl, to
escape a pick about to fail with no cooldown or break roll. A teleport after
the thief's own command, a pearl or chorus fruit now applies the usual
penalty, while one done to them by staff or another plugin still ends the
pick quietly. Item use is blocked during the ring, since the off hand was
still free.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The ring was placed from the crosshair alone, 60% of the way to whatever it
hit within 2.4 blocks. Looking down at a chest, its lid comes closer towards
the bottom of the view, so the bottom of the ring and the pick sank into it;
looking up at a raised chest did the same at the top, and a chest just past
2.4 blocks was not seen at all.

The ring shrinks with its distance, so each of its points stays on one sight
line from the eye. Placement now traces a grid of sight lines across the
ring's outline, far enough to see anything that matters, and floats the ring
short of the nearest block on any of them. The closest distance drops from
0.6 to 0.25 blocks, since the ring looks the same size at any distance.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The ring now fails on its first slip (dial.mistakes-to-fail, 1), separate
from the grid's three wrong cells. Every pass is 20% faster: 1.44 to 2.08
seconds, plus 0.008 per Dexterity level.

The pointer is no longer the held lockpick item, which blurred into a smear
of pixels when turned. It is a white needle with a dark edge across the
dots, drawn as the backdrop of a text display, so its edges stay straight
and sharp at any angle while it still glides at the client's frame rate.
pick-tip-degrees is gone with the item.

… the zone

The hit and slip bursts spawned on the pointer, which sits inside the zone
on a hit, so the sparkles covered the green dots. Particles also stay one
size while a close ring shrinks, so they swamped it. Bursts are now green
or red dust just past the needle's outer tip, sized with the ring, and the
outline kept clear of blocks reaches down far enough to cover them.

A thief who started a pick mid-jump dropped as they were held still, and the
ring stayed where their eyes had been in the air, above their view. The ring
now waits for them to land, or be in water or on a ladder, for up to a
second, then floats before their eyes; the steady countdown starts then.

With lockpicking.chest.minigame.grid.pack on, the pin grid dialog draws
each cell as a tile from the thievery:lockpick font: a dark board with a
rim, cyan pins while memorising, green set pins, red misses and amber
missed pins. Tiles reach over the gaps between buttons to join into one
board, but leave each button's outline showing, so the cursor still
lights the tile under it. The status line becomes pips for pins set and
slips, and Give up moves into the grid as a red plate that closes the
board, since the dialog clips anything below its last row.

Off by default: the font ships in the server pack (server-assets
tfmc_thievery), so turn it on once the pack carries it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The dialog's blur hides the boss bar, so the memorise and recall timers were
all but invisible. The title now counts down the seconds left, turning red
for the last three, and with the pack the board's top edge carries a strip
that drains gold while memorising and green, then red, while setting pins.
The dialog redraws each second for the title, or every 4 ticks for the
strip. Click callbacks now live 30 seconds, since frames come often.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The dialog now draws its own countdown, and its blur hid the bar anyway.
The lockpick ring keeps its bar.

Cell buttons are 20 wide to match their fixed 20 height, so the grid is
square cells rather than 24x20 rectangles.

From an Opus and a GPT-6-Astra review of the minigame changes:

- Both halves of a double chest are one lock: one fail cooldown, and one
thief at a time, minigame or probe menu.
- The access cooldown is checked again once the minigame is solved, since a
guildmate's pick nearby can start it meanwhile.
- A failed pick breaks only the lockpick it started with, and the grid keeps
the pick in hand too (hotbar, drop, swap, inventory) against modified
  clients.
- The ring waits for a laggy thief's press before calling a pass too late.
- /thievery reload ends running picks without a penalty, as documented.
- Door picking and grave looting stand aside while a thief works a lock;
they handle cancelled clicks, so the ring's cancel did not stop them.
- The grid's click actions are made once per game instead of 37 callbacks
per frame, now that the timer redraws it every few ticks.
- Any right-click marks a probe slot; only a plain left click probes, so a
number key or double click cannot snap the pick.
- The per-tick chest check no longer snapshots the chest.

Also drops slop: the grid's unseen boss bar updates, an unused title,
PinGrid's chest-menu layout, test-only helpers, and stale comments.

@coderabbitai resolve

The self-teleport finding from 2 Oct was fixed in 2156884 (a teleport the thief brings on themselves counts as a failed attempt), and the later review fixes are in a2179cf.

@ryanbarlow97 I’ll resolve my review comments on #33. Thanks for clarifying that a thief-initiated teleport counts as a failed attempt.

Learning: In Thievery chest lockpicking minigames managed by src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/thievery/door/LockMinigameManager.java, a teleport initiated by the thief counts as a failed attempt, not a cancellation without penalty.
