fix(test): add retry backoff for Windows task-cache-key temp cleanup - #6566
Conversation
Windows file handles can remain open during deletion, causing EBUSY/EPERM errors in removeTempTree. Added retryWithBackoff helper with exponential backoff (10ms starting delay, doubling per attempt) for both file and directory removal. Fixes CI failures on Windows for task-cache-key.test.ts cleanup. Lore-id: windows-cleanup-retry Confidence: high Scope-risk: narrow

Replace the timer promise with Bun.sleep
Whenever cleanup encounters a transient Windows error, this backoff uses a hand-built new Promise/setTimeout delay even though the repository contract explicitly requires Bun.sleep(ms) for sleeps. Use await Bun.sleep(delayMs) so the new retry path follows the mandated Bun runtime convention and avoids introducing the prohibited timeout-promise pattern.

Review (head 7cc52bb, gajae-reviewer on behalf of probepark)
Blocking: No code-review blocking findings. Approval is held by the verification gate.
CI: All reported non-skipped checks passed. The targeted task-cache-key test and TypeScript build passed. The Windows regression job was skipped, so this head does not prove the Windows locking fix.
Scope: +25 / -3, 2 files — test cleanup helper and a coding-agent changelog fragment. OCR excluded both files; no production source changed.
Conventions: Changelog fragment present; no generated files or labels changed.
ocr: blocking 0 / nit 1
Notable:
packages/coding-agent/test/task-cache-key.test.ts:203-239— both removal operations await bounded retries. Exhaustion preserves the last error as the cleanup error's cause. Directory traversal still avoids following symlinks.packages/coding-agent/test/task-cache-key.test.ts:194-199— the path change only affects remaining-file diagnostics, not deletion targets or test expectations.
Notes:
- At line 216, use
Bun.sleep(delayMs)instead of constructing a timer promise. - Run the cleanup regression on Windows with a transient file lock. The passing Linux test does not exercise EBUSY/EPERM recovery.
Spec: The PR's bounded-retry claim matches the code. Windows recovery remains unverified.
Checked and clean: Retry exhaustion, awaited file/directory removal, symlink handling, diagnostic paths, unchanged assertions, and changelog scope.
Not assessed: Windows lock recovery and package lint/typecheck. No local builds or tests were run in this pod.
Approval: Held. python3 /opt/data/scripts/gajae-approve-gate.py 6566 --head 7cc52bbbe6558c91d2f0ef16474248283cd27be6 returned NEED_LOCAL (exit 11) at 2026-10-10T13:12Z. The exact-head CI plan omitted check:@gajae-code/coding-agent.
- At head

- Re-request review after it passes.

Verdict
APPROVED
Summary
This PR adds bounded exponential-backoff retries to temporary-tree cleanup in the task-cache-key test. No actionable merge-blocking defect was found at the reviewed head.
Findings / Required Changes
No blocking or actionable findings.
Non-blocking Observations
A deterministic transient-removal failure test could directly verify retry and exhaustion behavior. The changed test currently exercises normal cleanup; this is an optional coverage improvement, not a merge blocker.
CI / Verification
At head 7cc52bbbe6558c91d2f0ef16474248283cd27be6, the affected task-cache-key.test.ts validation, affected-path aggregate, and virtual integration validation passed. The Windows dev:doctor/session-path regression job and opt-in WSLv2/NTFS qualification were skipped by CI selection/opt-in policy, so Windows-specific behavior was not exercised at this head. No local test execution was performed for this review.
Axis Coverage
| Axis | Verdict | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| A1 — Intent / Policy / Contract | APPROVED |
The bounded cleanup retry and changelog align; persistent errors still surface. |
| A2 — Architecture / Correctness / Failure | APPROVED |
Retries are bounded and preserve cleanup failure propagation after resource disposal. |
| A3 — Security / Privacy / Trust | APPROVED |
The change is confined to test-owned temporary paths and does not change a production trust boundary. |
| A4 — Verification / Tests / CI | APPROVED |
The affected test check passed; Windows-specific checks were skipped, with no demonstrated blocking deficiency. |
| A5 — Context / Compatibility / Platform | APPROVED |
The helper is test-local; no materially applicable shared cleanup abstraction or compatibility defect was identified. |
Limitations
The Windows-specific failure scenario was not validated by CI on this exact head because the relevant Windows job was skipped; the available affected test run was on Linux.

Approval remains held. The follow-up review reports no local execution. It does not satisfy the missing package check. The approval gate still returns

… prevent handle leaks (#6568) Root cause: SessionManager.closeStrict() only conditionally released the managed sidecar cache (which holds directory handles to .gjc). On Windows, these unclosed handles prevented test cleanup from deleting temporary directories, causing EPERM/EBUSY errors on Windows CI after each test. Fix: Always release managed sidecar cache when closeStrict succeeds, ensuring file handles are released even when resident blob cleanup is skipped due to session state. The sidecar cache is auxiliary to session persistence and safe to release unconditionally when close succeeds. Reverts pointless retry backoff added in #6566, which was masking the underlying handle leak. With the real issue fixed, retries are no longer needed. Fixes #5321 (Windows task-cache-key test failures). Lore-id: fix-windows-task-cache-key-handle Constraint: must release sidecar handles before returning from closeStrict Tested: locally on Linux; awaiting Windows CI verification Scope-risk: narrow (SessionManager.closeStrict path only) Reversibility: safe (adds explicit cleanup) Co-authored-by: GJC Agent <agent@gajae-code.local>
Fixes Windows CI test failures in task-cache-key.test.ts:removeTempTree
Root cause:
Windows file handles can remain open during deletion, causing EBUSY/EPERM errors when cleaning up temporary directories.
Solution:
Added
retryWithBackoffhelper function that retries operations with exponential backoff (10ms initial delay, doubling per attempt, up to 5 attempts). Applied to both file removal (fsPromises.rm) and directory removal (fsPromises.rmdir).Testing:
