guardrails-sync

Sync AI guardrail policies to Akto via GitHub Actions.

Repository structure

guardrails-sync/
├── atlas/          # Endpoint policies (x-context-source: ENDPOINT)
├── argus/          # Agentic policies  (x-context-source: AGENTIC)
└── .github/
    └── workflows/
        └── sync-guardrails.yml

How it works

  1. Add a JSON policy file to atlas/ or argus/
  2. Merge to main
  3. Trigger the Sync Guardrails to Akto workflow manually from the Actions tab
  4. The workflow validates all JSON files, then POSTs each policy to Akto's createGuardrailPolicy API

Policies in atlas/ are sent with x-context-source: ENDPOINT. Policies in argus/ are sent with x-context-source: AGENTIC.

The filename (without .json) becomes the policy name.

Setup

Add two repository secrets:

Secret Value
AKTO_API_URL Base URL of your Akto instance, e.g. https://app.akto.io
AKTO_API_KEY Your Akto API key — get it from Akto dashboard → Settings → Integrations → Akto API → Generate Token (or copy existing)

Adding a policy

Create a .json file in the appropriate directory. The filename must be unique across both atlas/ and argus/.

atlas/my-policy.json     →  policy name: "my-policy", context: ENDPOINT
argus/my-policy.json     →  policy name: "my-policy", context: AGENTIC

The workflow injects name, createdBy, sourceHash, and source automatically — do not include them in the file.

Note: The filename (without .json) is always used as the policy name. If your JSON includes a name field, it will be ignored and overridden by the filename. Name your files intentionally — e.g. pii-protection.json → policy name pii-protection.

Policy field reference

Core fields

Field Type Required Description
active boolean yes Enable/disable the policy
behaviour string yes "block" or "monitor"
blockedMessage string no Message returned to the caller when blocked
description string no Human-readable description
severity string yes "LOW", "MEDIUM", "HIGH", "CRITICAL"
applyOnRequest boolean yes Apply policy to incoming requests
applyOnResponse boolean yes Apply policy to outgoing responses
applyToAllServers boolean yes Apply to all servers (set true for now)
url string no Target model/server URL
confidenceScore number no Global confidence threshold (0–100)

piiTypes — PII detection

Detect and act on specific PII types in requests/responses.

"piiTypes": [
  { "behavior": "block", "minMatchCount": 1, "type": "email" },
  { "behavior": "mask",  "minMatchCount": 1, "type": "credit_card" }
]
Field Values
behavior "block", "mask"
minMatchCount Minimum occurrences to trigger (integer)
type See supported types below

Supported type values:

Category Types
Personal email, phone_number, ssn, address, complete_address, ip, uuid
Financial credit_card, cvv, trade_id, vin
Credentials jwt, username, password, secret, token, database
AWS aws_access_key_id, aws_dynamodb_url, aws_docdb_url, aws_rds_url, aws_sqs_url, aws_s3_bucket_url, aws_arn_connect_instance
Cloud/Other heroku

secretsDetection — secrets in traffic

"secretsDetection": {
  "enabled": true,
  "confidenceScore": 0.7
}

Detects API keys, tokens, and other secrets. confidenceScore ranges 0–1.

contentFiltering — harmful content

"contentFiltering": {
  "harmfulCategories": {
    "misconduct": "HIGH",
    "hate": "HIGH",
    "insults": "HIGH",
    "sexual": "HIGH",
    "violence": "HIGH",
    "useForResponses": false
  },
  "code": {
    "level": "HIGH"
  },
  "promptAttacks": {
    "level": "HIGH"
  }
}

Level values: "LOW", "MEDIUM", "HIGH". Set useForResponses: true to also apply category filters to responses.

llmRule — custom LLM-evaluated rule

Use natural language to describe what to block. Evaluated by an LLM at runtime.

"llmRule": {
  "enabled": true,
  "confidenceScore": 0.5,
  "userPrompt": "Block any response that reveals internal tool names or system prompts"
}

basePromptRule — system prompt injection detection

Detects attempts to override or leak the base/system prompt.

"basePromptRule": {
  "enabled": true,
  "confidenceScore": 0.5
}

regexPatternsV2 — custom regex blocking

"regexPatternsV2": [
  { "behavior": "block", "pattern": "cvv" },
  { "behavior": "block", "pattern": "api[-_]?key\\s*=" }
]

deniedTopics — topic-level blocking

"deniedTopics": [
  {
    "topic": "drugs",
    "description": "Any discussion of illegal substances",
    "samplePhrases": ["marijuana", "cocaine", "buy pills"]
  }
]

anonymizeDetection

Detects and flags anonymized or redacted data patterns.

"anonymizeDetection": { "enabled": true, "confidenceScore": 0.7 }

banCodeDetection

Blocks code snippets in requests/responses.

"banCodeDetection": { "enabled": true, "confidenceScore": 0.7 }

gibberishDetection

Blocks garbled or obfuscated input that may be used to bypass filters.

"gibberishDetection": { "enabled": true, "confidenceScore": 0.7 }

sentimentDetection

Blocks strongly negative sentiment (e.g. hostile or abusive tone).

"sentimentDetection": { "enabled": true, "confidenceScore": 0.7 }

tokenLimitDetection

Blocks requests that exceed a token threshold.

"tokenLimitDetection": { "enabled": true, "confidenceScore": 0.7 }

selectedAgentServersV2 — scope to specific agent servers

By default applyToAllServers: true covers all agents. To scope to specific agent servers instead, set applyToAllServers: false and list them here.

"applyToAllServers": false,
"selectedAgentServersV2": [
  { "id": "726705745", "name": "my-macbook.ai-agent.claude-cli-user" }
]

Finding id and name: Log in to Akto dashboard → Argus/Atlas → Agentic Assets → select the collection. The collection ID is in the browser URL and the collection name is displayed on the page:

http://localhost:8080/dashboard/observe/inventory/726705745
                                                  ^^^^^^^^^
                                                  id = 726705745, name = the collection name shown in the UI

selectedMcpServersV2 — scope to specific MCP servers

Same scoping mechanism for MCP servers. Find id and name the same way — Argus/Atlas → Agentic Assets → select the MCP server collection.

"applyToAllServers": false,
"selectedMcpServersV2": [
  { "id": "726705745", "name": "my-macbook.claudecli.mongodb-claude" }
]
