I have been exploring the codebase, and think it would be valuable to test different components to ensure they provide the expected behavior.
This PR adds the infrastructure for testing different parts of the code, and a couple of basic tests.
More tests can be added gradually.
Tests are run as part of CI, so future PRs can ensure that expected behavior remains.
