This implementation addresses an issue where if the URI contained a '.' character it could be erroneously considerd to represent a file (i.e. '/foo.bar/woo'). This also improves performance by roughly 2x. Signed-off-by: levigroker <[email protected]>

This implementation addresses an issue where if the URI contained a '.' character it could be erroneously considerd to represent a file (i.e. '/foo.bar/woo').
This also improves performance by roughly 2x.
