… docs recommend uploading this jar to VCS and claim there is no alternative. If there is then I would be glad for other suggestions.

Building on top of the Gradle build, this adds a Dockerfile.
My group has been using hap-ibd in docker just by putting the downloaded .jar into a container, but this integrates it into the repository.
