Kured, which comes next, will reboot Kubernetes nodes between 04:15 and 05:15 ET. apt installs unattended upgrades between 06:00 and 07:00, so a new kernel would otherwise wait about 22 hours for the next window. Installing at 03:45 lets a node pick up a kernel and reboot the same night, after the 03:00 Semaphore idempotency run has finished. The unattended_upgrades role gains unattended_upgrades_upgrade_time. When it is set, a systemd drop-in replaces apt-daily-upgrade.timer's schedule with that time plus up to 10 minutes of random delay, and the timer is restarted so the new time takes effect. Left empty, the default, the drop-in is removed and apt's own schedule applies, so only the Kubernetes group changes.

WalkthroughThe role now manages the ChangesUnattended upgrade timer
Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Change: Feature Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Kubernetes nodes will install updates at 03:45 Eastern, before the Kured reboot window. That upgrade can install from package lists refreshed hours earlier, so some updates may wait until the next day's run. Consider also scheduling the package-list refresh before 03:45; otherwise the change is safe to merge. Pre-merge checks |

Schedule the APT list refresh before the upgrade.
This override moves apt-daily-upgrade.timer to 03:45 but leaves apt-daily.timer on its default schedule. The default list-refresh timer starts at 06:00 or 18:00, with up to 12 hours of delay. The 03:45 upgrade can therefore use package lists from the previous day. Schedule and verify the list refresh before the upgrade window. (sources.debian.org)

Dropping this: unattended upgrades stay on apt's default 06:00 schedule, and Kured will reboot nodes in its 04:15–05:15 ET window the following night. The override has been removed from k1–k5. |
