Describe the bug
When the AI module is enabled, opening the Preferences dialog can become unresponsive under poor network conditions. In my testing, it often takes several to more than ten seconds before the dialog appears.
After analyzing the debug logs, I suspect that the AI module's online update check is blocking the initialization of the Preferences dialog. It seems that the update check is performed synchronously during startup instead of running asynchronously in the background.
Steps to reproduce
- Simulate a poor or unavailable network connection (for example, disconnect the device from the Internet, or block traffic to the domains used by darktable at the gateway/firewall).
- Click the Preferences button (the ⚙️ gear icon) in the upper-right corner.
- Observe that the Preferences dialog takes several seconds to open and the UI appears to freeze during that time.
