The feature request is inspired by issue #21498 / PR #21501.
I think darktable should not access the internet in the background without users being aware of it or able to suppress it.
So the suggestion is: in the AI preferences add a "check for updates" button, and possibly an "automatically search for updates" checkbox for users wanting this.
