Hi Eric,
As a long time appreciator of your writing it pleases me that finally I can possibly contribute (a little) back to you. I've added some small UI tweaks which I have found helpful.
Clicking on the image will enable and disabled the timer, and when the timer is disabled pressing G will step to the next generation.
These minor changes will hardly set the world alight but they do give a little extra control to the user.
