Closes #911

On SvelteKit 3, handleError receives { kind, error, event } instead of { error, event, status, message }. evlogHandleError() read the old fields, so its type no longer matched Kit 3's HandleServerError, and in production it returned { message: undefined, status: undefined }. Kit merges that over its defaults, so error responses came back as HTTP 200.

The hook now accepts both shapes. EvlogError handling is unchanged. On Kit 3, other errors return nothing so Kit keeps its own status and message. The hook doesn't read the deprecated status/message input getters. Kit 2 behaviour is unchanged.

Minimal SvelteKit 3.1.0 app, vite build && vite preview, createEvlogHooks():

evlog@2.32.0 this branch
GET /boom (route throws) HTTP 200 {} HTTP 500 {"status":500,"message":"Internal Error"}
GET /missing HTTP 200, status=undefined HTTP 404 Not Found
+error.svelte for a throwing load status=undefined status=500
GET /pay (EvlogError 402) HTTP 402 + why HTTP 402 + why
vite dev deprecation warnings 36 0

tsc --strict on handleError satisfies HandleServerError passes on Kit 2.70.3 for both versions. On Kit 3.1.0 it fails with evlog@2.32.0 and passes with this branch:

Type 'SvelteKitHandleServerError' does not satisfy the expected type 'HandleServerError'.
Types of parameters 'input' and 'input' are incompatible.
... is missing the following properties ...: status, message

Regression tests in test/frameworks/sveltekit.test.ts (SvelteKit 3 input (#911)) failed on main before the fix.

ELI5: SvelteKit 3 changed what it hands to evlog's error hook. evlog kept reading values that were no longer there, so error pages ended up with no status code and showed as successful. The hook now reads both the old and new shapes and lets SvelteKit fill in the status when evlog has nothing to add.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • Updated error handling for SvelteKit 3 while preserving existing SvelteKit 2 behavior.
  • Bug Fixes
    • SvelteKit 3 error handling now returns an EvlogError’s message and status. Other errors are logged and return no error details.

📝 Walkthrough

The SvelteKit error handler now accepts Kit 2 and Kit 3 input shapes. It returns version-specific values for EvlogError and other errors. Tests cover Kit 3 results and verify that deprecated input properties are not read.

The handler type accepts Kit 3 { kind } input and Kit 2 { status, message } input. It returns the EvlogError message and status; for other errors, it returns undefined for Kit 3 and preserves the input message and status for Kit 2. Tests verify Kit 3 results and confirm the handler does not read deprecated getters.

SvelteKit 3 errors keep Kit's own status and message instead of producing undefined values, and SvelteKit 2 behavior is unchanged. No merge-blocking risk remains.

Explanation

Issue #911 requires the exported createEvlogHooks().handleError to accept SvelteKit 3 input and satisfy HandleServerError. The reviewed source defines SvelteKitHandleServerError with the Kit 3 { kind, error, event } shape and the Kit 2 shape. evlogHandleError() returns no value for Kit 3 non-EvlogError inputs and preserves structured EvlogError handling. The added regression tests cover the Kit 3 input behavior. The supplied validation report states that the Kit 3 type check passes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #911. The source change updates the SvelteKit error-hook type and behavior, the tests cover the new Kit 3 cases, and the changeset documents the patch release. No unrelated implementation or test changes are identified in the supplied pull request summary.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It links issue #911, explains the problem and solution, documents Kit 2 and Kit 3 behavior, and reports validation results. The checklist boxes are not marked, but the required information is present.

The Kit 3 tests cover the key paths.

The tests use the real handler with realistic input shapes. They also check that the deprecated getters are not read. This follows the repository rule to call the user-facing contract directly when no Node request driver exists.

One optional addition: add a test for a Kit 3 input where the error is not an Error instance, for example a string. The handler should return undefined and should not call logger.error.
