Requirements: Python and sandbox. If you're running a gentoo box, you should have both if you're running a Linux arch (sorry bsd folk, sandbox is linux specific right now). If you're not on Gentoo, well, I suggest you switch. ;) Meanwhile, sandbox is available on our mirrors, offhand you need at least sandbox-1.2.12 It's not the homepage, but it's certainly more friendly- http://gentoo-portage.com/sys-apps/sandbox Start of the sandbox project page is at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/sandbox/index.xml Installation is pretty straightforward- just run ./setup.py install It will install confcache to /usr/bin, and redirect.sh to /usr/share/confcache. confcache requires a directory to store the global cache in, and for tracking file information. This directory is specified either via a commandline --confcache-dir, or pulled from the env var CONFCACHE_DIR This var _must_ be specified, it's an error calling confcache without it enabled. Example usage- cd some_source_dir confcache --confcache-dir ~/confcache ./configure FAQ: Q) Why aren't all of the configure checks cached? A) Because that's how the configure script was written; if it's not written to cache the result of a test, confcache can't use it. Q) Why does confcache sometimes disable the cache for a configure run? A) Cache is stale. CHOST and CTARGET changes invalid the cache, as will changing md5 for files the cache tracks. Q) Confcache doesn't work for me! A) Be *specific*; is it caching, but invalidating every run? what file is invalidating it? Is the invalidation valid? If you've found a file that changes, but the invalidation is questionable (/proc/cpuinfo on cpufreq enabled processors for <=confcache-0.3.4 for example), contact me; if you've got a bug, contact me. Else, do the leg work and contact me if it still doesn't make sense :) Q) Confcache invalidates the cache on a false positive! A) Are you sure? Verified that this var varying won't break anything, nor will it easily cause issues with broken configure scripts? If so, email me please- more info you can provide, the better. :) ~harring [email protected]
