The script overhaul was to better extract DOI and PMID strings from the PubMed and Crossref services, and to merge elements relative to unique citations. Specifically, if a DOI or PMID is missing from some gene record but present in another, use all available information. And check and update DOI and PMID against PubMed and Crossref services if there is a discrepancy with the human-curated input.
