Thanks for preparing this release.

Personally I think it would be good to see if the breaking change in #299 addressed in some way.

If there's still a breaking change, a jump to v0.10.0 would be warranted.

Thanks @EwoutH ! I think it's possible to make the changes from #299 less breaking.

I'll convert this PR to draft and send in another fix for that.

Rebased to main to include recently merged #305, for backward compatibility of #299 as commented above. Ready for review now.
