We discussed it a bit with Alexey.

First, the intention was to support RHEL 9, and AlmaLinux 9 is the right choice here, not CentOS 9 Stream. Almalinux offers a rebuild of RHEL from sources (similarly to how CentOS did), while CentOS Stream is ahead of the corresponding RHEL version (a kind of minimal Fedora).

We already have AlmaLinux 9 images in packpack.

(Also, Rocky Linux is another old-fashion-CentOS replacement. We have no images for it in packpack, but if there is a need, I see no problems to add it.)

There is no problems to add CentOS Stream as well if we really need. However, we should take a few details into account:

  • Name it differently from the old-fashion-CentOS: centos-stream/9 (highlighting that it is not CentOS in the old sense) or centos/stream9 (following the official docker image tags naming). This is about the directory, the image tag and the backport repository name.
  • We should create a backport repository (once we agreed on the name).
  • We should use official docker image as a base: https://quay.io/repository/centos/centos?tab=tags (the old https://hub.docker.com/_/centos is deprecated).
  • We should enable CRB repository (CodeReady Builder, PowerTools successor), like we do for AlmaLinux 9.

AFAIU there is no need in CentOS Stream 9 for now. Feel free to reopen if you plan to continue this work.
