Summary

Makes browser calls work end to end and ships the complete calls UI, all on dev's architecture: controllers in @polymorfa/browser, React bindings in @polymorfa/react, server minting in @polymorfa/sdk. Contracts and the coverage ledger are pinned to polymorfa/polymorfa@83b819dd6 (the purpshell/calls-phase-1 branch, PR #131, which carries the full /api/voip/* surface incl. renegotiate, ws-ticket and agent-token).

What changes

  • @polymorfa/browser: createSignalingCallsBackend (the CallsBackend over the REST signaling paths — mint call id, offer, idempotent teardown for reject/hang-up), IncomingCallRelay + incomingCallFromWebhook for the application's call.received relay, and on CallsController: the calling line (linkedDevice audio+video, cloudApi audio-only) with capabilities, device lists and selections, live switchDevice (track replacement), connectedAt.
  • @polymorfa/react: CallSurface is the full call experience — IncomingCallCard, CallStage, CallControls, DialPad, pop-out call window, useCallDuration. Official-desktop-call-window layout in a monochrome Material-3 voice, colors from the shared --pmfa-* appearance variables, strings from new calls.* locale keys, every affordance gated on snapshot.capabilities. pmfa-call follows the same controller contract. Design record in docs/superpowers/specs/2026-09-05-calls-ui-design.md.
  • @polymorfa/sdk: MessagingClient.voip.token; ClientRules typed as the runtime actually returns it (the previous shape came from a stale contract); SetClientRulesRequest gains the calls bindings.
  • Contracts/ledger: POST /api/voip/token covered; the four signaling routes excluded as client-token browser routes; the developer event/webhook-delivery/operation/platform-session routes that landed on dev recorded as missing for triage. Every fingerprint refreshed — the contract now documents Polymorfa-Version and X-Request-Id response headers on every operation, so shapes changed without any method change; getPlatformOperation is now getOrganizationOperation and the observation-policy operations carry the Business App tag.
  • READMEs (root, browser, react, nextjs), CHANGELOG, and a React calls example.

Verification

npm run typecheck, npm test (208), npm run lint, npm run format:check, npm run build, npm run build:workspaces, npm run check:coverage (strict, changed: 0), npm run check:names, npm pack --dry-run for the root and every workspace.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added audio and video calling with incoming calls, dialing, mute, hang-up, device selection, video upgrades, and pop-out support.
    • Added authenticated WebSocket and REST signaling with reconnection, renegotiation, media recovery, and ICE handling.
    • Added VoIP APIs for browser tokens, socket tickets, and per-call agent tokens.
    • Added configurable call lines, capability-based controls, localized statuses, React calling components, webhooks, and client call controls.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved call recovery, device switching, media cleanup, error handling, and accessibility announcements.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded calling, authentication, device, UI, webhook, and VoIP guidance.

- createSignalingCallsBackend: the CallsBackend over CallsSignalingClient —
  outbound calls mint a browser-side call id and establish media with the
  SDP offer, answering posts an offer for the announced id, reject and
  hang-up release the pod's session through the idempotent teardown route.
  Everything runs on the client token.
- IncomingCallRelay + incomingCallFromWebhook: the application relays its
  `call.received` (and `call.ended`) webhooks into the browser; the mapper
  turns the JIDRef caller into the displayed peer.
- CallsController carries the calling `line` (`linkedDevice` audio+video,
  `cloudApi` audio-only) and `capabilities`, device lists and selections
  (`setPreferredDevices`, `switchDevice`, `refreshDevices`), and
  `connectedAt`; WebRtcMediaFactory honours preferred devices, lists devices,
  and swaps a live microphone/camera by replacing the outgoing track.
- @polymorfa/ui: `calls.*` messages for the complete call UI.
Replaces the placeholder CallSurface with the full call experience shaped
after the official WhatsApp desktop call windows in a monochrome Material-3
voice: IncomingCallCard (name, audio/video subtitle, avatar or mirrored
self-preview with camera/mute toggles and a ⋯ device menu, Reject/Answer),
CallStage (remote video or avatar hero, PiP self-view, name + ringing/
number ⇄ duration line, always dark), CallControls (split [camera|⌄] and
[mic|⌄] pills with live device pickers, red hang-up), DialPad (digits only;
video call only where the line carries video), useCallPopout (separate
resizable call window), useCallDuration/formatDuration. Colors derive from
the shared --pmfa-* appearance variables; strings from the calls.* locale
keys; everything gates on snapshot.capabilities. pmfa-call follows the same
controller contract with localized labels. Happy DOM tests cover the
incoming card, decline over the wire, answer/mute/hang-up, dialing per line,
and provider direction/theme. Design record: docs/superpowers/specs/
2026-09-05-calls-ui-design.md; React example wires the signaling backend.
… returns

- MessagingClient.voip.token mints the browser call token (POST /api/voip/
  token, server credential only).
- ClientRules now matches GET /api/sessions/{session}/client-rules as the
  runtime actually returns it (recipientMode, allowedActions, rateLimit,
  maxDaily, allowedOrigins, maxConcurrency, allowedNumber, enabled) instead
  of the stale contract shape; SetClientRulesRequest gains the calls
  bindings; ClientAction and ClientRecipientMode are typed.
- Tests: voip token request/response, typed rules, export inventory.
Messaging and Platform contracts re-pinned to the dev revision that carries
the calls surface. Ledger: POST /api/voip/token covered by
MessagingClient.voip.token; the four /api/voip/calls/{id} signaling routes
excluded as client-token browser routes served by @polymorfa/browser; the
developer event, webhook-delivery, operation, and platform-session routes
that landed on dev are recorded as missing for coverage triage. Every
existing fingerprint refreshed: the contract now documents the
Polymorfa-Version and X-Request-Id response headers on every operation, so
each shape changed without any method change; getPlatformOperation is
getOrganizationOperation, and the observation-policy operations carry the
Business App tag. README source revision, CHANGELOG, browser/react/nextjs
READMEs updated.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 271bd

The calling platform adds browser signaling, media controls, and call UI, but some edge cases can create duplicate calls, show inaccurate device or terminal call state, throw during device selection, or leave microphone/camera capture active. These behaviors should be addressed before merge.

💡 Codex Review

place: async (input: PlaceCallInput, signal: AbortSignal) => {
throwIfAborted(signal);
return { callId: createCallId() };

P1 Badge Route the dialed target through outbound signaling

When DialPad calls place(to, { line, video }), this backend discards the entire input and returns a newly generated UUID. The only subsequent wire operation is CallsSignalingClient.offer, which sends just { sdp }, so neither the destination number nor selected line ever reaches the server and a UUID that has no server-side call session is offered instead. As a result, the advertised outbound calling flow cannot initiate a call to the entered recipient.

import { createPortal } from "react-dom";

P1 Badge Declare react-dom as a peer dependency

This new static import makes every @polymorfa/react entrypoint depend on react-dom, because index.ts eagerly re-exports this module, but the package manifest declares only react and @polymorfa/browser as peers. Consumers using strict dependency resolution such as Yarn PnP therefore fail to import the package with an undeclared-dependency/module-resolution error, even if their application separately uses React DOM; add a compatible react-dom peer declaration.

else if (deviceId.length > 0) void controller.switchDevice(kind, deviceId);
else controller.setPreferredDevices({ [kind]: undefined });

P2 Badge Switch the live input when Default is selected

During an active call, choosing the dropdown's “Default” microphone or camera option takes this branch and only updates the stored preference. It never calls switchDevice, so the existing sender continues using the previously selected track while the snapshot and dropdown report that the default device is selected. The default choice should also replace the live input, using the browser's default device.

"hasVideo": {
"type": "boolean",
"description": "Whether the offered call advertised video.",
"example": false

P2 Badge Add hasVideo to the exported webhook payload type

The newly pinned contract makes hasVideo a required member of CallReceivedPayload, and the new browser adapter consumes it, but packages/typescript/src/webhooks/events.ts still exports CallReceivedPayload with only from and callId. Applications using the SDK's typed webhook handler therefore cannot access or construct the documented video indicator without a cast, undermining the inbound video-call flow; update the public webhook payload type and its type-level expectations with the contract.

…t handling in the browser kit

Mirrors the monorepo's calls Phase 1–3 surface (0da82dc7a):

- @polymorfa/browser: CallsSocket (ticketed calls WebSocket — pushed call.*
  lifecycle events mapped onto the controller vocabulary, ICE both ways,
  capped reconnect with a fresh ticket) usable as the backend's lifecycle
  source and as WebRtcMediaFactory's candidateTransport (REST polling pauses
  while up). CallsSignalingClient.renegotiate/socketTicket/socketUrl;
  BrowserTransport.baseUrl. Media sessions gain enableVideo (camera +
  re-offer) and restartIce. CallsController.enableVideo(), a reconnecting
  status with ICE restart inside a bounded resumption window, and offers
  refused 410/503 end the call as pod_lost/capacity instead of erroring.
- @polymorfa/react + @polymorfa/elements: the camera button upgrades audio
  calls to video; Reconnecting… rendered from the existing message. No visual
  changes.
- @polymorfa/sdk: voip.socketTicket, voip.agentToken, maxSetupsPerMinute in
  the client rules.
- Contracts refreshed to 0da82dc7a; ledger covers renegotiate,
  ws-ticket, agent-token (391 ops, 224 covered, 71 excluded).

Make the fake timers observe cancellation.

clearTimeout is a no-op and fire keeps callbacks in the queue. The tests therefore cannot detect a missing clearTimeout call. The new #clearResumption cleanup in onDispose and on recovery stays unverified.

-      fire: (ms: number) =>
-        queue.filter((t) => t.ms === ms).forEach((t) => t.fn()),

+ for (const entry of queue.filter(
+          (t) => t.ms === ms && t.cancelled !== true,

+          entry.cancelled = true;
+          entry.fn();
+        }

The queue entry type becomes { fn: () => void; ms: number; cancelled?: boolean }.

…sition race, webhook relay docs

Addresses the CodeRabbit review on #2:

- CallsSocket: connect() settles when close() interrupts a pending attempt;
  #open refuses re-entry while a socket exists or an attempt is in flight, so
  a reconnect racing a manual connect() no longer orphans a socket.
- WebRtcMediaFactory: switchInput/enableVideo re-check closed/aborted after
  getUserMedia and stop the acquired tracks instead of touching a closed peer.
- Example app: accepts both webhook 'from' forms and relays call.ended as well
  as call.received; browser README says webhook-only integrations must relay
  both; React README names the token provider's real default route.
- Contract revision: ledger, changelog and coverage test pinned to
  83b819dd6 (calls-phase-1 head).

…ticket acquisition

The connect attempt is tracked from before the ticket request: close() settles
the pending connect(), aborts the in-flight ticket request, and bumps a
generation so a stale ticket completion never opens a socket; a later
connect() can start a fresh attempt. Test covers close-during-ticket and
reconnect-after-close (CodeRabbit round 2 on #2).

The resumption tests cleared timers into a no-op, so a missing clearTimeout in
the controller would have passed silently. Cancelled entries are now skipped
and the recovery test asserts the give-up timer is really cancelled when ICE
recovers and when the controller is disposed (CodeRabbit nitpick on #2).

A callback may clear another timer queued at the same delay; the pre-filtered
snapshot would still have run it (CodeRabbit on #2).

polymorfa/polymorfa#129 and #131 are merged, so the pinned contract revision is
now on dev. One shape changed: voipOffer gained a documented 429 (the client
rule max_setups_per_minute rejects call establishment past its limit; a re-offer
through /renegotiate is not setup-limited). No operations added or removed, so
the coverage totals are unchanged.

Contracts and ledger refreshed to polymorfa/polymorfa@b413f2c6a, now that #129 and #131 are merged to dev. Only voipOffer changed shape (it gained a documented 429 for the call-setup rate limit); no operations added or removed, so the coverage totals are unchanged and check:coverage --strict passes.

The guard I added last round sat inside the `connected` branch, so `accepted`,
`ringing` and the fallback branch could still put an ended or failed call back
into a live status, and `videostate` could switch video on after the call was
over. It now runs once after the id filter, with `incomingCall` and `ended`
exempt — the first starts a new call, the second is idempotent.

DeviceFields.select was the remaining synchronous disposal hole:
setPreferredDevices asserts the controller is live and throws, a disposed
controller keeps its last snapshot so the selects stay interactive, and React
does not catch throws from event handlers — so it reached window.onerror.

The element rejection test now detaches its unhandledRejection listener in a
finally, so a failed assertion cannot leave it swallowing Node's reporting for
the rest of the file.

Guard the post-await transition in enableVideo against disposal.

If media.enableVideo(...) resolves after disposal, the existing checks can reach ObservableController.transition, whose assertActive() throws and rejects enableVideo(). Third round of the same defect, so this time it is the whole class rather than
the two sites named: every synchronous controller mutator reachable from a DOM
handler (setMuted twice in the dock, once via onCamera, twice in pmfa-call,
setPreferredDevices in the device selects) now runs through one named
`ignoreDisposed` helper per package. The controller throws once disposed while
keeping its last snapshot, so the surfaces stay mounted with live buttons, and
neither React nor the element catches a throw from an event handler.

The react tests' unhandledRejection listeners are registered through a shared
watcher removed in the existing afterEach, so a failed assertion can no longer
leave one attached to swallow a later test's failure.

Regression tests on both surfaces click every mute control against a disposed
controller; both fail when the helper stops catching.

Two early exits in the media session returned without stopping a stream that
carried no track of the requested kind, leaving the device open; every other

…grade on the session

#connection filtered on callId alone, and a terminal snapshot keeps its callId.
Media teardown is asynchronous, so a queued connection-state callback could
still land after the end: a late `connected` revived the call and stamped
connectedAt, a late `closed` rewrote a clean hangup as connection_failed. It
now refuses terminal snapshots, as #receive and #ice already did.

Both surfaces decided to offer the camera upgrade from capabilities.video
alone, which says nothing about whether the media session can renegotiate —
and enableVideo/restartIce are omitted from sessions that cannot. The
controller now exposes canEnableVideo (line has video, call is not yet video,
session can renegotiate). The React dock keeps the settled design — the
affordance stays visible on an audio call — and disables it until an upgrade
is possible, so a non-renegotiating session shows the same disabled button as
a call that has not connected, rather than a live one that does nothing. The
element, which was already asked to gate the render, hides it.

Also: the React test's window `error` listener registers through the shared
teardown so a failed assertion cannot leave it attached; the element's status
heading is a message map with idle/ready absent on purpose; the overloaded
element test is split so a failure names the right subject.

Both nitpicks from the last review are in c390b7e as well: the status heading is a HEADINGS message map with idle/ready absent on purpose, and the overloaded element test is split into the assertive-region test and a camera/capability test so a failure names the right subject.

Learning: In `packages/browser/src/calls/controller.ts`, `CallsController.enableVideo()` is always a concrete controller method. It returns without action when the call cannot upgrade, including when the media session lacks `CallMediaSession.enableVideo`. UI surfaces must use `CallsController.canEnableVideo` to determine whether an audio-to-video upgrade is currently available.

Learning: In `packages/react/src/calls.tsx`, `CallControls` can render the audio-call camera upgrade control during `connecting` because `showCamera` does not require the call to be live. `CallsController.enableVideo()` has no media session before connection, so the control has no effect in that state. The current PR intentionally leaves this behavior unchanged because hiding or disabling the control is a React UI design decision.

Move the stranded enableVideo documentation onto enableVideo().

The browser package emits public declaration files. These adjacent JSDoc blocks can attach the upgrade description to canEnableVideo while leaving enableVideo() undocumented.

…leVideo's doc

The terminal guard exempts `ended` so a finished call can still be closed out,
but the branch then applied the second event's reason over the first. And the
canEnableVideo getter had been inserted between enableVideo()'s JSDoc and the
method, which would misattach the description in the emitted declarations.

The stranded enableVideo() JSDoc is back on its method in b6c90c3 — the getter had landed between the block and the method, which would have misattached it in the emitted declarations. Good catch on something only the .d.ts would have shown.

@purpshell Thanks for the fix and clarification. The enableVideo() JSDoc must remain directly attached to CallsController.enableVideo() so emitted declarations document the correct method.

Concatenating the message and the peer fixed the peer's position and the
ellipsis for every locale; `calls.ringingTo` carries `{peer}` so a locale can
place both.

A stalled WebSocket upgrade never fires onopen or onclose, so connect()
stayed pending and the held socket slot suppressed reconnects. The
heartbeat cannot see it because it starts on open. A per-attempt
deadline (default 10 s, 0 disables) now drops the socket like a dead
one, settling connect() and scheduling a backoff reconnect.
