Nova Pro Screen Saver

Small Windows tray utility for the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless base station OLED display.

It can blank the whole 128x64 OLED screen, including the top status row, to reduce burn-in risk. It can also show a lightweight audio spectrum analyzer or a channel mixer view when you want the display to do something useful instead of sitting on a static image.

Nova Pro Screen Saver running on the base station

Why

The Nova Pro base station OLED is useful, but it often shows static UI elements for long periods of time. I wanted a simple utility that keeps the screen black when I do not need it, without relying on the partial GameSense screen area.

This app writes directly to the Nova Pro USB HID OLED interface, so the whole display can be controlled.

Tray Options

Right-click the tray icon:

  • Enable blank: writes a full black frame and refreshes it every 30 seconds.
  • Enable analyzer: shows a 128-band audio spectrum analyzer at 20 FPS.
  • Enable channel mixer: shows a silent-at-rest 7.1 channel map with squares that grow per channel.
  • Audio device: choose Auto or a specific Windows playback device for the audio visualizations.
  • Start with Windows: toggles per-user autostart.
  • Disable: stops writing to the OLED.
  • Quit: exits the app.

The selected mode and audio device are remembered between launches.

Icon states:

  • Green dot: active and working.
  • Gray dot: disabled.
  • Red X: the OLED device or audio capture could not be opened.

Analyzer

The analyzer uses WASAPI loopback capture, 128 FFT bands, rolling peak hold, a fixed -60 dB to 0 dB scale, and +3 dB/oct pink compensation.

Channel Mixer

The channel mixer uses the same WASAPI loopback capture and renders up to eight channels as growing squares on the 128x64 OLED. Front left/right sit near the top, center is in the middle, side and back channels form the surround shape, and LFE sits in the lower-left corner. With no audio, the frame stays black.

This can be useful with virtual surround devices such as SteelSeries Sonar Gaming: select that playback device in both the game and this app, then use the channel mixer to see whether the game is actually sending discrete multichannel audio or only stereo.

To reduce burn-in risk, the channel mixer slowly drifts the channel map by up to 8 horizontal pixels and 2 vertical pixels over an approximately two-minute cycle.

Requirements

  • Windows x64.
  • SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless connected by USB.
  • Normal user permissions. Autostart uses the current user's Windows Run registry key.

The release build is self-contained, so .NET does not need to be installed separately.

Build

dotnet publish src\NovaProOledSaver.Tray\NovaProOledSaver.Tray.csproj -c Release -r win-x64 --self-contained true -p:PublishSingleFile=true -p:EnableCompressionInSingleFile=true -o artifacts\publish\win-x64

Output:

artifacts\publish\win-x64\NovaProScreenSaver.exe
